"Scarsdale - not just for the residents!"

Never having resided in Scarsdale, I write as someone who has truly enjoyed the programs available to me and everyone.. That being the Scarsdale Adult School - I can recall signing up for a great class on South Western Art many years ago, volunteering to organize a luncheon thereafter, and then found myself on the Advisory Board Committee for the Adult School the following year! It was a wonderful experience, and I truly enjoyed being on the Board of Trustees for the Adult School too. I enjoyed some great art, literature, cooking and floral arrangement classes there too! I really like Scarsdale Village as there is a nice selection of restaurants, Zachy's Wine & Liquor Store, and some very cute stores.. but making the village most attractive are the Tudor style buildings, all uniformly presented which is lacking in some of the other nearby towns. There are the Chase Park summer concerts, and also the Scarsdale Art Society also has outdoor shows and sales there too.. When my children were younger, and we would visit our Scarsdale freinds, I was always envious of the Scarsdale Pool (4 pools actually), which was always more like a little country club, located near the stables, and across the street from a baseball field and some tennis courts ....Scarsdale of course is known for its fine homes and schools, and its close proximity to New York City. It is rather like Larchmont in home prices but has no waterfront! Scarsdale is close to Hartsdale, White Plains ,Eastchester and Ardsley - depending upon which direction you choose! Many famous people have lived in Scarsdale - and it features its own little newspaper - The Scarsdale Inquirer. There are 5 Elementary Schools, Edgewood, Heathcote, Quaker Ridge, Fox Meadow and Greenacres. http://www.scarsdaleschools.org/site/default.aspx?PageID=1 Scarsdale is located close to the White Plains Hospital, and has easy access to public transportation. The train station is located directly within the village with the requisite number of coffee shops nearby! Parking can be a problem.

  • Variety of recreation programs
  • Convenient commute to NYC

"Mamaroneck - Hard to say but an easy town in which to live!"

Named after an Indian saying, and where over 27000 residents reside - from all walks of life, Mamaroneck has so much to offer. There are 4 Elementary Schools, one Middle School and one High School. The graduating classes each year speak volumes about its educational programs. While every child has different needs, Mamaroneck is a very desirable area in which to live. For those wishing a smaller classroom setting, then the Rye Neck School District in Mamaroneck might be a great choice. I would always take my children (when younger) to the annual Firemen's Parade held around July 4th weekend, and the 6th annual Wine tour was successfully held this year in addition to the annual golf outing, and the very first St Patrick's Day Parade . Mamaroneck boasts it own Movie Theatre, newly renovated library, the Emelin Theatre, beach, ice skating rink, a vast array of restaurants and shops, the Hampshire Golf Club, and we cannot forget the harbour, boating, yacht clubs and those gorgeous expensive homes also. The train station has a new restaurant "Club Car Restaurant" and Mamaroneck is just 35-40 minutes from Grand Central Station in New York. Residents love it! I just wish the main street (Mamaroneck Avenue) had more charm..The architecture on Mamaroneck Avenue is not so great but many of the waterfront homes make up for it!
Pros
  • love the festivals
  • community oriented town
  • Great setting
  • Modern Library
  • Professional Theatre
  • Slew of good restaurants
  • Water views
Cons
  • Parking spots can be hard to get on the main thoroughfare
  • The architecture on Mam. Ave is lacking!

"Larchmont - a European flavor and just 18 miles or so from midtown Manhattan"

Whenever people ask me to compare Larchmont to say Scarsdale or Greenwich, I have to mention how Larchmont offers upscale living, water views (if desired), fine dining, the Manor Park (which is approximately 13 acres of tranquility and offers approximately 5000 ft. of shoreline), popular schools and it is all just 35 minutes or so by train to New York City. This is compared to Scarsdale with no access to the Long Island Sound, and Greenwich which is listed further away from the city. With a French American School in the Manor, Larchmont has long been a favorite of Europeans. Not just for the wealthy, there are some smaller lesser priced homes, coops and condos which might not fit everyone's budget, and one doesn't obtain a large home for the prices offered. Approximately 5800 people in Larchmont per the 2010 census, and just 18 miles from midtown Manhattan. No wonder Larchmont was ranked 11th in 2005 as one of the best places to live in the United States. The easy access to the trains, dining and recreation are a big attraction also as Larchmont Village is only about 1.1 square miles. Many of the long time residents will either buy larger homes in Larchmont or downsize to smaller but all wishing to stay in Larchmont.. that is the appeal of this community... People simply love it!
Pros
  • Friendly Community
  • Good School System
  • Cute shops
  • Family-friendly
Cons
  • Expensive
  • High real estate prices & taxes
  • lacking diversity
