"Area of town with alot of riff-raff"

I don't know this entire neighborhood that well, but I am very familiar with the Schoolcraft area. Not only did I live about a mile away on Archdale St, but my dad's friend lived on Auburn near Schoolcraft.

It's funny because some of the homes in the area are actually very nice bungalows and two-story brick buildings, but there are hoodlums all over the place around here. You are always hearing or witnessing a fight, or a robbery somewhere along Schoolcraft. When it is warm outside, you can smell marijuana wafting through the air.

People also race their cars up and down Schoolcraft with the music blaring loudly in this neighborhood. The locals also made sure to give anyone they are not familiar with the evil eye, like they are saying, "Watch your back."

Now don't get me wrong, a few streets around here look very nice, like over by Acacia. There are houses so nice over here that I would actually consider living in. Plus the lawns around this part of the neighborhood are usually well kept up.

There are bus routes up both Evergreen and Schoolcraft that provide public transportation to the local residents. Overall, due to too much nonsense going on with the young delinquents, I wouldn't choose this neighborhood.
Pros
  • Some streets with above average homes
  • Public transportation is available
  • Decreasing rent prices
Cons
  • Too many thugs and crime around here
  • Loud and noisy on Schoolcraft
  • Median population 18 years

"Not an Area in Demand"

This is yet another unfortunate area of Detroit and one that people tend to look to in describing the city as a whole. That's very unfortunate but this area lives up to the negative depiction. The area is rundown, in need of some major updates, and riddled with crime.

It's sad because it's an area that probably had a great story to tell in the past. There are some nice homes here but they are few and far between. You can get a real steal here in terms of cost of living and there are some nice homes that have great potential. The problem for many is getting past the crime and the negative influences of the area as a whole.

It's not that the area is all bad, but it most certainly doesn't offer much. It's not really that close to amenities that you would need on a regular basis. It's not a highly desirable area as you can do better with adjacent neighborhoods that are far safer.

Sure it may make for a good investment, particularly if revitaliation efforts ever become a reality here. It's an area that has a below average income and that makes for a lot of young people and unfortunately high crime. It's not where you'd seek out and you could very well do better looking elsewhere. Hopefully there is hope for this area in the future!
Pros
  • Good Value on Homes Here
  • Close to Downtown Area
  • Decreasing rent prices
  • Public transportation is available
  • Inexpensive housing
  • Proximity to downtown
  • Some streets with above average homes
Cons
  • High Crime Area
  • Fair Amount of Abandoned Homes or Those in Need of Updates
  • Better Areas Nearby
  • Loud and noisy on Schoolcraft
  • High crime area
  • Plumetting house values
  • Too many thugs and crime around here

"Westwood Park – Even Mace Won’t Help You"

Westwood Park is one of those neighborhoods you will hear mentioned, but there is never anything good being said. If you are looking for adventure and enjoy watching robberies, fights and pathetically young children speaking with the foulest language you’ve ever heard, then Westwood Park might be for you. Are you someone who just can’t sleep without the roaring sound of sirens all night? Again, you will love this neighborhood.

Sure, there are a few well-kept streets where neighbors even plant a few flowers, but is it really worth sleeping with one eye open and constantly wondering if your car will be vandalized, or even missing when you wake up? Yes, you can find dirt cheap housing here, but if you look hard enough in other neighborhoods, you will find good deals with more of a neighborly spirit. This is not the area where you want to be the new person everyone picks on. If you think you’ll have peace-and-quiet while kids are at school, think again. This is the neighborhood for dropouts.

There are a few positive notes tough. First, you can find public transportation nearby, but it’s rarely on time. Second, you are close to downtown so you can find things to do, restaurants to eat at and bars to have a drink, but there certainly are not any quality grocery stores nearby.

"Packed and young - youll have no choice but to know your neighbors"

From Outer Drive to Schoolcraft, the Westwood Park neighborhood of Detroit sits just northeast of I-96 and is bordered by Evergreen on the west. The neighborhood sits well below city averages in home values and – spread over just .3 square miles – is home to nearly 1,500 people. A bit of a crowded neighborhood, Westwood Park has a media age of only 18, and has one of the lowest household income averages in the Detroit metro area.

Westwood Park graduates less than 50% of its residents from high school and, because of this and the youth in the city, is on the high end of crime occurrences in the area. Though renting space can get very affordable in the area, you may have to deal with loud or mischievous adolescents or teenagers on a frequent basis.

A short distance from the Fisher Building and the Redford Theatre, those living or spending time in Westwood Park can find ways to entertain themselves during the evenings, but will likely have trouble finding a variety of places to shop, park, eat or enjoy leisure time within the small neighborhood itself. Not an outlier in violence or unemployment when it comes to nearby neighborhoods, it is nonetheless not as esteemed as many of its other popular or historic neighboring areas.
Pros
  • Decreasing rent prices
  • Proximity to downtown
Cons
  • Plumetting house values
  • Median population 18 years
