"Heart of NYC Shopping"

Eat your heart out, Gossip Girl! Few visitors to New York, particularly those with a fashionable bent, will escape the city without a visit to Fifth Avenue in the 50's, home to some of the most elegant design houses in the world. From Bergdorf Goodman to Saks Fifth Avenue, Bendel to Armani and Prada, this district is filled with high-end labels taking up some very high-end real estate. The area lights up at Christmastime as stores strive to outdoor each other with elaborate window displays (although pedestrian travel can verge on the unbearable). Head further east, however, and the vibe gets more relaxed. While Sutton Place all the way to the East marks one of the city's most prestigious old-money enclaves, 56th Street between these two poles of elegance is more relaxed, with local restaurants, shops, cafes, and galleries. The original P.J. Clarke's on 55th and 3rd has been made venerable with age.

"Nothing exciting but the apartments are nice"

East 56th is a high luxury street but there isn't anything on it but luxury buildings. There aren't any restaurants or bars or shopping. And, there is a lot of traffic (car and pedestrian). It's a pretty sterile street with a lot of noise. So, I don't get the appeal of living in one of these buildings if you have to cab just to go to the deli. I'd pass but the high end people seem to love living on this street.
The corner of 56th and 5th is the famous Trump Tower. It has a bizarre shape supposdly so that it can provide as many "corner" apartments as possible. Tons of celebrities and people just famous for being rich live in this building. It's one of the more expensive apartment buildings in the city. The corner of 56th and Park marks the site of another famous luxury building: The Drake Hotel. Unfortunately, it was demolished like 20 years ago which is one of the many New York Historical tragedies. And, I guess, this street has plenty of luxury buildings on it, so they figured they could do with the loss of the Drake. Most of the buildings on this street are luxury buildings. I wouldn't really want to live here, though. If I had that kind of money and didn't, for some reason, live in the West Village, I feel like further uptown would be much more desirable. 56th doesn't really have a neighborhood feel to it.
West 56th has all kinds of cool things on it; but, East is just a little lackluster. This just not really anything to do and for all that money you would be paying to live on the street, I would prefer to have at least a local watering hole.
Pros
  • Luxury apartments
Cons
  • Dead at night
  • No good bars

"East 56th Street"

As you may have guessed from other reviews, I love shopping, and tend to judge streets by the stores and accessibility to... other stores. I was surprised to find a unique ethnic clothing store on this street, with designs by a fantastic woman named Beverly Feldman.

I was very impressed with the craftmanship and vision of this designer. It's nice to turn off Madison, 5th, and Park and see some originality without all of the glitter and flashing lights.

I thought that this street was nicely located, well populated, and convenient to most anything one would need in the city.

East 56th Street is close to several metro stations and is close to many buses. Foot traffic is heavy and I recommend the street to EVERYONE!
