"Everything a student would want and need..."

Right now, Corryville is going through a transition, and I would say it is for the better. Right now, there are at least three new apartment buildings being constructed and there are other projects that are being spoken of in the works to make this section of Cincinnati a more appealing place to live. The overall area is residential, with pockets of restaurants, bars and shopping here and there. Also, not forgetting the University Medical Campus and Hospital that takes up almost half of the small township.

The cultural atmosphere is interesting as there is a mix of college students, land developers and owners who rent to them. There are some young professionals and singles who probably haven't left the area because of its close proximity to downtown and the cheap living rates compared to Mt. Adams and Downtown. Unfortunately, It is very typical to see homeless people and be solicited to by them for money. I have never personally felt threatened or worried about myself in this part of town, but I still take precautionary measures to not leave anything valuable in my car or walk around the neighborhood at night without another person. But overral, in the day I run into plenty of friendly and genuine people, which is refreshing.

Being right next to the University of CIncinnati, Corryille is a prime place for students to live affordably, but with all these new buildings being developed this could change in the coming years. When it is typical school times and days of the year, parking can be terribly hard to find on the north-west side as commuters will park on the streets to save money from the garages.

On Short Vine -a very popular street- it has a really nice Public Library, the Post Office, various pizza places, bars, and coffee shops. Kroger is at the end of Short Vine, but it is a small one which is cramped and usually packed, which makes it a very unpleasant grocery shopping experience (there is word they will demolish it soon and build a better one). Last but not least on Short Vine there is Bogarts, which is a very popular concert hall in Cincinnati. On the outside Bogarts looks a little shady and small, but the store front is deceiving to its actual size.

University Medical Campus is the loveliest part of the whole area. There is a fun fountain inside their small park area that is open for people to walk into and sit in the grass. Other than that "park areas" are virtually non-existent in Corryville. There is also the Corryville Recreation Center that is a gym that is more affordable than any chain YMCA or Fitness business.

Overall, I have enjoyed the time I have lived in this area and I would recommend it to any students who are looking for cheaper rent than living in the dorms.
Pros
  • UC's Medical Campus is the cleanest area
  • Bogarts is a fun place to go
Cons
  • the local grocery store is a dismal place to shop.

"Corryville, AKA Home of UC..."

Coryville has gone through a lot of change these past few years, and is still undergoing a continuous process of development. There’s been a steady takeover of UC students, which is reflected both in the businesses and the residential set-up you’ll find here. In terms of businesses, it’s clear that most are geared toward students. You’ll find CVS, pizza joints, liquor stores, small eateries with cheap beer, etc. lining the streets, usually filled with a young adult crowd.

Corryville wasn’t always such a college-centric neighborhood, though, which you can see in the clash of old and new that pervades the area. In terms of the residential set-up, for example, you’ll see a lot of development going on. The older buildings, some of which have been there since the early 1900s, are being torn down and replaced by newer condos or apartment buildings. It’s becoming a very appealing place for college students to live. Granted, it’s not the safest neighborhood in Cincinnati, but much of the crime is slowly being pushed out. I’ve never personally felt unsafe walking through Corryville, but it’s always advisable to keep an eye out, especially at night.

The most well-known street in Corryville is Short Vine because it has a lot to offer. You’ll find a few restaurants and bars, a small Kroger at the end of the street, and--last but not least--Bogart’s, a major concert hot spot. It might look unassuming from the outside, but Bogart’s puts on some great shows. They do a great job of attracting musicians from various genres. I’ve seen a few local bands perform here, but they also attract big names. I know they hosted Neon Trees in 2011, and I once saw Regina Spektor here, for example.

Aside from the college crowd, you’ll also find that many residents are somehow involved with University Hospital, which makes up a big part of Corryville. University Hospital (and campus) is part of UC, but also attracts non-college medical professionals to the area. It’s understandable that people have found Corryville a great place to live because of its steady development and cheap rent, but it’s also true that you won’t really fit in if you’re not part of either of these groups, whether that be UC or University Hospital.
Pros
  • University Hospital
  • Inexpensive rent
  • Ideal for students
Cons
  • There's still crime in the neighborhood
  • Not very diverse...almost all UC students!

"Corryville fits the bill for students"

Corryville is a neighborhood adjacent to the University of Cincinnati with most of the residential parts being taken up by student housing. The other half of Corryville contains the main hospitals of Cincinnati. The hospitals and related medical facilities and offices take up the portion of Corryville that is north of Martin Luther King; also in this area re several buildings that are part of the University of Cincinnati. The area to the south of Martin Luther King contains the business and residential district of Corryville.

The entire area around the University of Cincinnati is undergoing a transformation with many of the old buildings being replaced by completely new constructions changing the look of the neighborhood. There are a number of new residential buildings along Martin Luther King and the nearby streets.

There are a number of small businesses along Short Vine, which culminates in the University Plaza shopping center where the local Kroger sits. Corryville is filled with a number of businesses geared towards students, including many eating establishments with cheap beer and food. Bogart's is home to concerts covering a variety of musical genres and features both local and national acts.

Because of the proximity to the University of Cincinnati and the numerous hospitals, there are several hotels in Corryville. There is also a good deal of crime in this area, but it is primarily non-violent. The Short Vine area has had a history of crime from loitering youths, especially during the summer; however, there has been an effort to stop this in recent years with a heavy police presence, especially at night.

I would honestly only recommend the Corryville neighborhood for someone planning to attend the University of Cincinnati or maybe for young singles working in the hospitals. The location is convenient and rents are super cheap, although more expensive in the newer construction.

"Corryville: U.C is taking over"

Like most neighborhoods close to town, Corryville is just one more older community targeted for change. Developers have ramped up their efforts to tear down the old to make way for the new. That includes a few abandoned businesses but also the homes of longtime residents. It's a progress of sorts.

Over the past several years, apartment and condominium communities have risen up along Martin Luther King across from University Hospital. Construction on newer mixed-use developments is in all stages of completion. When finished, they will house college students, medical-field residents and professionals with a sprinkling of restaurants and businesses mixed in. If it's a lifestyle that should appeal to youthful residents.
Corryville has a few of the problems you'll find in aging, urban communities when new meets old. There are incidents of crime, but a combination of city and U.C. Campus Police do what they can to keep it in check.

Interesting buildings
If you drive west on Martin Luther King as you pass University Hospital you'll see a fabulously curvy structure by renowned architect, Frank Gheary. Just above the hill there's a huge EPA complex on the right. Further west, you'll see a tall, rather strange, poured-concrete building that was part of U.C.'s Brodie complex built in the late 60s. It seemed even stranger back then.

Short Vine for entertainment and more
Short Vine has been Corryville's primary entertainment and shopping venue for decades. Bogart's is one of the few long term businesses still open. They've been offering live concerts for years and still manage to pack the house with music lovers from rock to hip-hop. Restaurants come and go from the area, but you can still find pizza, Jamaican and a few other food specialties.

Kroger is small but they offer a college-student friendly stock of organic fruits, organic frozen meals, traditional groceries and snacks, and lots of beer of course. Kroger is targeted for future expansion.

The Corryville branch of the Hamilton County Public Library on Short Vine has computers with free internet access. U.C.'s DAAP college has an art gallery nearby.

Highland Coffee House is nearby on Highland Ave. at University Ave. They were a coffee house long it was the in thing to do. Mecklenburg Gardens on University has been serving up German food in their vine-covered bier garden since 1865.

Schools
University of Cincinnati, UC Medical School, UC College of Pharmacy
Scheil Elementary School is being demolished to make way for development.
Corryville Catholic on Calhoun (corryvillecatholic.org)
The Willow Tree House Preschool is on Highland (thewillowtreehouse.com)
Mayerson Academy for Human Resource Development is on Highland (mayersonacademy.org)

Recreation
Corryville Recreation Center on Eden Ave. has a computer center, fitness center, playground and basketball court
Burnett Woods is close. It has picnic areas and more.
Pros
  • Bogarts is a fun place to go
