"Eastwick - On the edge of town"

On the southern border of Philadelphia is the community of Eastwick, named after Andrew M. Eastwick. Originally, it was settled by the Lenni Lenape Indians who found the area ripe for hunting and fishing and the swampy environs were nicknamed "The Meadows.. Recently, The Heinz National Wildlife Refuge was built as a refuge for wildlife and connects "Eastwick to Tinicum Township.

For many years, it was a diverse working class community whose settlements of all races found work at the nearby industry such as the oil refineries and sewage treatment plants. Because of the close proximity to Interstate 95, the U.S. Postal Service located a regional processing facility here. The area is serviced by a branch of the Free Library.

Regrettably, it has seen a decline in property values by some 38 percent according to a recent survey by the Philadelphia Inquirer. Nevertheless, renewed interest in development has caused many historic churches to have to move their facilities rebuilding with funds from the Redevelopment Authority.

Portions of the area were secured for building the Philadelphia Airport. A major trolley line and regional rails run into Center City through West Philadelphia. A number of short-term suites has located to service business travellers to-and-from the airport.

"Youll never be late to the airport again."

The neighborhood of Eastwick has an interesting border of land around it. One side there is the Darby Creek, the other side you have the Schuylkill River, 70th street is just north and south you will find the Philadelphia International Airport.

These neighboring areas contribute greatly to the present condition of Eastwick.
Sometimes referred to as “the Meadows” Eastwick is often plagued with flooding and environmental issues like brownfield clean-ups. Because the neighborhood is boarded by Darby Creek, which is a marshy area and the Schuylkill heavy rains as resulted in a lot of flood damage that has left many houses and buildings in the area abandoned.

Eastwick is a predominantly industrial area as many distributing companies are taking advantage of its vicinity to the airport. Many of these companies provide employment to residents in Philadelphia as the area is relatively easy to access via public transportation.

The neighborhood is also attractive to individuals who work at the Philadelphia International Airport. Most of the people who reside in Eastwick are transient workers such as pilots and flight attendants.

The cost of living in this neighborhood is relatively cheap but there it’s pretty far from the rest of the city and there are a lot of issues with water damage. It is however very close to the Heinz National Wildlife Refuge which is a great place to visit.
Cons
  • Abandon lots used for dumping
  • Located in the flood plain

"City life with a touch of nature"

Eastwick is a neighborhood that is located in the Southwest section of Philadelphia. It is the southwestern-most neighborhood in the city and is adjacent to the Philadelphia National Airport. Eastwick is bordered by the city line with Delaware County, Cobbs Creek and Darby Creek.
The neighborhood is named after Andrew M. Eastwick and is commonly referred to as “The Meadows” by locals.
There are a large variety of home selections in Eastwick including apartments, single-family residences with lawns and gardens, row homes and apartment complexes. Most of the homes were built during the early 19th century and are composed of brick.
Residents of Eastwick get to enjoy the best of both worlds. They have immediate access to the city but also get to experience a rural lifestyle because of the numerous creeks in the area where they can fish, swim and crab.
One of the highlights of the neighborhood is the Heinz National Wildlife Refuge which extends from Eastwick to Tinicum Township. Many different species of wildlife reside there including birds, deer and raccoons.
Some blocks of Eastwich are situated in a flood plain. This can lead to flooding and the abandonment of homes that turn into vacant lots that are later used for illegal dumping.
