Most people prefer Artist & Craftsman Supply at 828 S Wabash - its proximity to Columbia College and The Art Institute make it a natural for Chicago artists! I've shopped at Michael's, Paper Source, and Blick -- and I miss Pearl, which used to be on Chicago Avenue. For the adventurous crafter, try Tom Thumb in Evanston - our family choice for gathering school project supplies!!!
