"Mt. Washington: A Family-Friendly Neighborhood on the Edge of Cincinnati"

Mt. Washington is on the East Side, about ten minutes from downtown, making it a very convenient neighborhood with easy access to the heart of Cincinnati. At the same time, however, it lies right on the edge of city limits, giving it less of an urban feel.

Mt. Washington is known for housing family-owned businesses, as well as being a pretty family-friendly neighborhood. You'll find both apartment complexes and single-family homes, most of which are well-kept, though relatively old. There's a wide range of property costs--you can find anything from beautiful old mansions to tiny run-down apartments--it just depends on where you look.

Though Mt. Washington is known for having slipped a bit in the safety records over the last few decades due to rising drug and crime rates, there are still many aspects that make the neighborhood family-friendly. One example is its schools. Elementary schools include Sands Montessori, Mt. Washington Elementary, and Guardian Angels School. The well-known McNicholas High School is also located in Mt. Washington.

The recreational facilities available to children and families are another great reason why Mt. Washington is so family-friendly. These facilities include the Mt. Washington Rec Center, which offers a baseball field, swimming pools, football field, tennis court, fitness center and more, as well as the Stanbery Park on Oxford Ave., which offers hiking trails, playground equipment, and a picnic shelter, as well as great hills for sledding in the wintertime.

In terms of shopping and dining out, there are no big malls in Mt. Washington, but there is a Kroger, and you can find your average chains, including fast food restaurants. Keep in mind that Mt. Washington is also located near Anderson Township and other neighborhoods that offer many options in terms of dining out or shopping. Downtown is also a short drive away, making it easy to find nice entertainment and dining options.

The one thing I do warn about is traffic on Beechmont Ave. It can get pretty nasty, especially during rush hour, and I believe Cincinnati's traffic services have spent a number of years trying to ameliorate the jams that occur so frequently on this street. Everyone's hoping for a solution in the near future, but for now, be mindful that a traffic jam on Beechmont could definitely delay your trip.

"Mt. Washington: A quiet hilltop"

If you can figure out a way to avoid Beechmont Ave. traffic to and from work, Mt. Washington can be a pretty nice place to live. That is if you don't mind residing in one of Cincinnati's many hilltop neighborhoods. Most of the homes are small and well maintained. There are also quite a few large rental complexes. They have a community council (mwcc.org) to deal with neighborhood issues and help keep things running smoothly.

Mt. Washington is quiet for the most part, but they've seen a change or two, just like most other Cincinnati neighborhoods. Most of the changes have been to the small business district at the top of the hill. Businesses come and go from the strip of small storefront locations on Beechmont Ave., but that block of stores always manages to remain full.

Shopping
All along Beechmont Ave. just beyond the top of the hill and before the water tower you'll find several strip shopping areas. There are a few fast food restaurants, small shops, a Walgreens, Goodwill and a few banks. Kroger is the biggest commercial draw. There's also a Mt. Washington Farmer's Market where area farmers set up booths from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. each Thursday, June - October.

There's a Mt. Washington branch of the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County at 2049 Beechmont with free internet access.

If you can't find what you want in the area at the top of the hill, you can always travel a few miles up the road to Anderson Towne Center Mall and beyond for major department stores, restaurants and more.

Historic Mt. St. Mary's Seminary
Even those who pass by St. Mary's every day might not know about the beautiful interiors in the seminary that sit about 100 yards back from Beechmont Ave. When I toured the main building a few years ago I was fascinated by the hallway lined with historic Rookwood tiles, the grand stained glass windows, fabulous paintings and vintage ornate décor throughout the building.

Recreation
Mt. Washington Recreation Center is a Cincinnati Recreation Commission Facility located at 1715 Beacon Street. They have a baseball field, pool with diving board, gym, tennis court, computer center and more.

Cincinnati Public Schools
Sands Montessori on 6421 Corbly Rd. (sandsmontessori.cps-k12.org)

Private Schools
Guardian Angels School, 6539 Beechmont (gaschool.org)
McNicholas High School, 6536 Beechmont (mcnhs.org)
The Athenaeum Mt St. Mary's Seminary, 6616 Beechmont (athenaeum.edu)

There are no hospitals in Mt. Washington, but Mercy Anderson is about 10 to 20 minutes away depending on Beechmont Ave. traffic.

"Mount Washington - Quiet Residential Community"

Mount Washington is a peaceful community located in the eastern portion of Hamilton County about 10 minutes east of Downtown Cincinnati, making it an easy commute. Mt. Washington lies within the confines of the City of Cincinnati, although it is anything but urban. A portion of Mt. Washington lies adjacent to the Little Miami River and Lunken Airport. The community extends south towards the Ohio River, but does not reach it as the neighborhood of California stands in the way.

Mount Washington is primarily a residential neighborhood, with a large number of apartment buildings and duplexes. The area is showing its age, as many of the homes were built in the early to mid 20th century. However, there have been a number of new homes built in the last few decades. The main business district of Mt. Washington is small, with most of the businesses centrally located along the Beechmont Avenue corridor. Traffic can be congested in this area during morning and afternoon rush hours, but less so at other times of the day. Because Mount Washington has a large number of apartment dwellers, parts of the community seems more transient and have somewhat more crime than in the areas of Mount Washington that are concentrated with single-family homes. Because many of the homes in this area are older and there are so many apartments, the cost of housing in this area is less than in other residential neighborhoods.

Mount Washington is conveniently located to the shopping, restaurants, and medical facilities located in adjacent Anderson Township. Children living in Mt. Washington attend Cincinnati Public Schools. There is also a Catholic elementary, Guardian Angels, and a Catholic high school, McNicholas, as well as a Montessori school located in Mount Washington.

The Mt. Washington Recreation Center offers various athletic activities and classes. The center offers baseball fields, a gym, tennis court, swimming pool, and more. Several parks are also located in or near Mount Washington, including the California Woods Nature Preserve, Magrish Riverlands Preserve, and Stanbery Park.

Overall, Mt. Washington is a convenient, relatively inexpensive, family-friendly neighborhood.
