"Quirky, Colorful, Diverse Neighborhood"

Humboldt is a community popular with students due to its close proximity to Portland Community College. Funky, this area is overrun with busy, active residents, who don’t let a little Oregon rain stop them from being outside. You rarely drive through this neighborhood without seeing tons of bicyclists or runners.

If you are searching for a home in this area, you will find lots of colorful residences (think of quirky), as well as old style Portland homes that seem to populate most neighborhoods, but here it's a bit different, a Humboldt like spin if you will: some homes are nice while others have a very decided, expressive personality. This is a very diverse community whose citizens are comprised of all types beside students: retirees, young families and professionals. There are some cool shops, and you are close to Mississippi Avenue and North Alberta where there are even more incredible unique stores. However, Humboldt is certainly organizing and trying to take the next step to attract more businesses and restaurants.

"Young, Hip Neighborhood Full of College Students"

This young, hip neighborhood is an urban area mixing residential and commercial streets. If you're in your twenties and want easy access to lots of restaurants and coffee shops, Humboldt may be right for you. Humboldt has many bus lines, and most of the streets have bike lanes, making it a popular area for students who regularly commute to other parts of the city. Most residents don't have cars; those that do still tend to use bikes or buses for their daily commute.

Some Portlanders consider Humboldt and neighboring Boise to be a single neighborhood. The 'Boise' part of this neighborhood is home to Mississippi Ave, a destination for popular coffee shops, bars, and shops. They're all independent; you won't find a Starbucks anywhere. Locals spend a lot of time in this part of the neighborhood, and you're sure to find your favorite gathering spots in no time. N. Killingsworth Street is another great place to find things to do in the neighborhood.

The Humboldt area is best known as the home of Portland Community College. Because of this, many of the neighborhood's residents are college students. It's also home to Humboldt Elementary and Jefferson High School, so this community definitely has a younger feel. Many professors also live in the blocks surrounding the college, though, so there's definitely a good mix of age ranges.

Many of the homes in this neighborhood are brightly colored, giving residential streets a funky and artistic vibe. Others are more traditional, with beautiful well-kept gardens. There are also modest homes that are a bit more unkempt; these are mostly inhabited by students looking for inexpensive off-campus housing.

  • Bus and bike friendly

  • Affordable
  • Cute homes

"Great Neighborhood for Students and Those Seeking a Deal"

Humbolt is a NE Portland neighborhood near the Piedmont, Overlook, and Boise neighborhoods. One great thing about Humbolt is it is a walk or short bike ride away from Mississippi Avenue and Alberta Street shopping areas. Both have lots going on year-round including bars, restaurants, live music, cool stores and festivals. This means that if you are in Humbolt, you are going to have entertainment and experience the full "Portland lifestyle." While you are a bit farther from downtown in NE Portland, the good news is that Humbolt is accessible to the MAX, so you have good public transportation options at your disposal.

Due to the fact that the Cascade Campus of Portland Community College is in Humbolt, you will see many college students in this area. The good news is that they can also find low-cost houses and apartments to rent in this area. There are some really cute old houses in Humbolt, and it is possible to still find a really nice place to live for a reasonable amount of money. There are also some new condo buildings in the area that look quite nice.

Humbolt seems to have a nice sense of community, and really everything one needs is conveniently located. There is even a branch of New Seasons on Killingsworth that is easy to access from this neighborhood.

Although there are many students in Humbolt, it is also quite diverse so you can find families as well as seniors.

  • Affordable

Cons
  • Farther from downtown
