"A jewel of a neighborhood!"

East Oak Lane is truly a treasure! Traveling along North Broad St., you have no idea what is hidden away at the City's "Northern Gates:" a 10 square block neighborhood of green space and handsome homes where the City kisses the suburbs. Beautiful enough to entice me to move here from NYC- they don't have homes like these in Manhattan! The architecture is some of the finest and diverse in the City ranging from authentic Colonial, to ornate Victorian, turn-of the century masterpieces, mid-century modern...The community values a high quality of life and has planted hundreds of trees through the Oak Lane Tree Tenders, they've won greening awards from the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, they actively support and preserve the Oak Lane Library (a Carnegie structure), they have a strong Civic Association and East Oak Lane Town Watch. Neighbors are always seeking new businesses that better serve the community- "bookstores, bike shops, more restaurants, and charming landscaping and hardware stores" are big on the list...Only 4 stops to Center City from the newly restored Melrose Park Train Station, yet also have access to Creekside Coop, Trader Joe's and Whole Foods in Montgomery County. But really...by NYC standards... the housing prices here are so cheap!
Pros
  • Beautiful homes with large yards and gorgeous trees!
  • Commuter's paradise
  • Supportive, engaged community of neighbors
Cons
  • Progressive neighborhood Starved for more, cool businesses that better serve the residents
