"Desirable Neighborhood in SE Portland..."

Wow. This place has come a long, long way. Once one of the more undesirable neighborhoods in Portland, Brooklyn is now thriving with young families, lots of great local shops and restaurants, community parks and very good schools.

One of the oldest neighborhoods in Portland, Brooklyn really cherishes and honors its past, yet wants to keep moving forward in their quest to rid once and for all the unsavory reputation in had many years ago. Homes are fairly affordable still, and many are historical set on beautiful tree lined streets. Three parks, Brooklyn Park and Brooklyn School Park are popular for their playgrounds and with plenty of space for picnics and games and Oaks Park conducts outdoor summer movies and concerts. The very popular Aladdin Theatre is here and is a well sought out music venue that has great live music.

Overall, there is something here for everyone. While there are some areas that still need work, Brooklyn is the neighborhood to watch.
Pros
  • Outdoor summer concerts

"Fascinating and historical revitalized area"

Brooklyn is a very quaint and picturesque neighborhood. In fact, it is a historical area since it is one of the first neighborhoods in all of Portland. Brooklyn even has its own "historical society' that works to preserve this neighborhood's heritage. In the 1960's, Brooklyn was kind of a down and out neighborhood. But, it had a total turnaround in the 1980's and now is a very desirable place to live. The only downside is that it still is host to some industrial sites.

Brooklyn has its own very distinctive shopping, entertainment and nightlife. One of the best theatres in the whole city is The Aladdin Theatre, which is right in Brooklyn. They have great performers throughout the year including music and comedy. The Aladdin Theatre has been open since the 1920's! You will also find some adorable stores and interesting restaurants in Brooklyn.

Another positive factor about Brooklyn is it is convenient. You are extremely close to Sellwood and also quite near other interesting SE Portland areas. It also isn't too far to downtown. If you don't have a car, you can easily find public transportation options t take you throughout the city.

A diverse array of people live in Brooklyn and you will find everyone from the hipster to the senior. The homes tend to be older restored bungalows and simple four square homes. There is also some new architecture mixed in throughout Brooklyn.

"Diverse Up-And-Coming Residential Neighborhood"

Not a borough in NYC, Brooklyn is a central Portland neighborhood with a much quieter ambiance. This mostly residential area along the Willamette River offers a diverse mix of house styles, along with a smattering of apartments and newer condos.

As one of the oldest neighborhoods in Portland, there are several historical landmarks, which include the Poulsen House, built in the 1890s, and Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Many of the businesses in the area are housed in historic buildings, giving the community an eclectic and historical feeling. In addition to residential areas and small, locally owned businesses, Brooklyn is also home to a few industrial sites, which are located along the river, along with a large railyard.

The neighborhood used to be known as a low-income area before it was revitalized a few decades ago. Now, it is considered a middle-class neighborhood, and some even consider it to be among the most desirable housing areas of SE Portland. It's close to other popular Portland neighborhoods, and seems to offer something for everyone. There are many families with young children here, and you're likely to see many people out and about, including cyclists, joggers, and moms pushing strollers. It seems very safe and family-focused.
