As far as live shows go, there are so many different venues in Philly to check out. If the theater is your thing, the Avenue of the Arts hold some of the city's best places to go see a play, orchestra, etc. There are also the Walnut Theater, Liacouras Center, Mann Music Center, and the Dell East for concerts and shows.
If you want a smaller venue to explore I would suggest World Cafe Live. Not only do they have performances by well- and lesser-known artists, but they also have an open mic where musicians can come and play, as well as network. The North Star Bar is similar, but not as exciting, in my opinion.
The city is filled with places to go for a live show. I'm sure if you research you'll find even more places than the ones that were suggested. The city is filled with possibilities.

Union Transfer is a new music venue that just opened up a year or two ago. They aren't as big as The Electric Factory in terms of artists that they bring in or actual size of venue, but it's still a great place to see bands.
Other smaller spots include Johnny Brenda's, the North Star Bar and the El Bar. World Cafe Live is also cool! I think it really depends what type of music you are into, as different venues showcase different types of music.
