Cincinnati has a long history of diverse manufacturing and industry. As birthplace of Procter & Gamble, Cincinnati is the home base for many of the products they produced. One of the most famous, is soap. Ivory soap was manufactured at the Proctor & Gamble plant, Ivorydale, located on the western side of Cincinnati along Spring Grove Avenue (a very important street in Cincinnati industrial history.) Other items that P&G manufactured at this plant were Tide laundry detergent, Crisco, and Crest. Cincinnati's nickname of "Porkopolis" was derived from its large meat packing industry; Kahn's started out in Cincinnati. Today there are still a number of meat processing and packing plants, both local and national. Cincinnati was also a center for machine tool manufacturing at places like Cincinnati Milling Machine (which became Cincinnati Milacron and is now known as Milacron). Baldwin Pianos were also made in Cincinnati at the company started in the late 1800s. At one point, Baldwin was the largest US-based piano manufacturer, but its pianos are no longer manufactured in the US and it is now a part of the Gibson guitar company.
