Best Chicago neighborhood/suburb for DePaul grad student and engineer boyfriend?

My boyfriend and I - Kansas natives! - are moving to Chicago this year for work and school (he is a mechanical engineer and I will be attending DePaul for my Master's degree). What are the best, safest areas in and around Chicago for two young professionals to live?

Obviously, it depends on exactly what you're looking for, but I'm looking to get out of the city, and I'm a 27 year old professional, and I'm looking at Evanston. It's a suburb just North of the city and there are trains straight south into the Loop, and it's like a little version of Chicago to begin with. It's very safe and friendly, with tons of great restaurants to pick from and really everything you need. There's a great vibe in Evanston. I'm falling in love with it and I think you will too!
