Where can I find the perfect place in/around Austin?

Here is what we are looking for : we love the cultural diversity and things to do in Austin, but we do not want to live in the "big" city.... so we are looking for a community around Austin with a small town feel (no bed room community!!!!)....we are in our 40's (kids are grown up), love the outdoors, not very conventional.... any suggestions?

DLDuncan Do you already have a job there? If so, what area of Austin? Do you have school aged children? This will help with the area you want to live in.

DLDuncan All of the towns listed here are north of Austin. Pflugerville and Round Rock are closest off of I-35 and both are nice areas to live in. RR has good schools, I am not familiar with Pflugerville schools, sorry. Cedar Park is closest off Hwy 183 and has very good schools. Also the North Austin areas off of 183 are nice areas to live in .... I do know that most of these areas also have very good schools. Best of luck to you. Personally I prefer the 183 side to the 35 side for traffic reasons, but everyone has their own preference.

fancyme9359 Thank you so much for the information. No, unfortunately I don't have a job. I currently live in Louisiana and looking to start my life over in a new place. I'm looking for a clean slate and I've heard really good things about Austin. I want the piece and quiet of living in the suburbs but yet still be close to downtown to experience that part of Austin as well. How fast could I get to downtown if I lived in Cedar Park?

JanB Unfortunately, when you want to be 'close' but 'not in a bedroom community', it is kind of like saying "I want a nice warm ice cream cone"! Ain't gonna happen that way. When you talk about living in Cedar Park, you are talking about horrendous traffic both ways IF you work in the city itself (Austin). But, there are lots of other places to work other than downtown that would cut your commute significantly. I'd say find the job first and a home later.
