"There Once Was Farmland Known As Wissinoming..."

Located by the Delaware River, Wissinoming was name for the creek that runs through. With a park of the same name, including two playgrounds, the neighborhood has always been prided for its nature.

The area isn't really accessible through public transportation. Especially since the Trenton Line no longer stops in the vicinity. However, if Interstate 95 is right in the neighborhood, so its a quick drive to other portions of the city.

The homes in Wissinoming are generally row single-family and townhouses. Many are one- and two-story abodes. Prices range to 102,000 on an average, with 86,000 being a median.

There are two elementary public schools run by the School District of Philadelphia. The third elementary school was taken over by Mastery Charter. Middle and high school students are zoned to schools in nearby Frankford. For smaller children there are around 5 daycares.

The neighborhood has some pretty cool bars and restaurants. If you check out reviews from restaurants in the area, Wissinoming is said to have the city's best cheese steak. There aren't any real shopping options and there's one gym in the area.

Recently, Wissinoming formed a Town Watch to help assist in deterring the pockets of crime within the neighborhood. While there are crimes, the numbers are very low compared to other portions of the city.

The neighborhood came from modest farmers who nurtured the park to a resident filled neighborhood filled with different people. Wissinoming isn't the most lavish area in Philadelphia but it does have tons of potential, with awesome neighbors and beautiful landscape.

"Crime is on the rise."

Wissinoming is a Northeast Philadelphia neighborhood located along the Delaware River. Much like the neighboring communities of Tacony and Mayfair, crime is on the rise. This has caused major tension amongst homeowners and renters in the community.

Most houses are single-family, one-story homes. There is a large population of owners, but Section 8 was recently approved in the area, so low-income renters are starting to move in. According to the permanent residents, these renters are cause for much stress in the neighborhood. Gun crime, drug usage and prostitution have become an issue. Although some homes are well maintained, trash litters many blocks and public spaces. As a result, residents formed a Wissinoming Town Watch in 2012, with the hopes of revitalizing the area. They have not yet been successful.

Apart from the crime, Wissinoming has a number of good qualities. There is the expansive Wissinoming Park, two playgrounds, and the School District of Philadelphia operates three elementary schools, a middle school and a high school. And although public transportation is not very accessible, there is easy access to I-95.

Overall, the rise in crime has caused Wissinoming to transform into one of the least desirable areas to live in the Northeast. The active Town Watch team may be able to combat the crime and filth, but it looks like it will take a while to put the neighborhood back on its feet.
Pros
  • Low rent
  • Town Watch
Cons
  • High crime and drug usage
  • Trash-strewn streets

"Crime is on the rise in this little neighborhood."

Do you like crime? Like watching stray dogs dig in the trash? If you answered “yes” then Wissinoming may be the place for you. The northeast Philadelphia neighborhood is steadily increasing in crime activity with no sign of improving anytime soon and more people are moving out of the area than to it.

Wissinoming wasn’t always a dead zone and you can see this in the sporadic well maintained homes throughout the neighborhood. These homes are few and far between so they stand out amongst the houses that are falling in around the people that inhabit them. A lot of this decay is blamed on absentee landlords who rent their property to irresponsible tenants.

As a result of the overgrown yards and dirty streets the property value of Wissinoming is low so it’s cheap to buy houses there. And there is plenty of property to buy; lots of the houses in the district are vacant.

Even the perks of living in the community, like cheap rent and easy access to I-95 can’t overshadow the negatives of Wissinoming. It’s gotten so bad that the residents there are more and more concerned to the point that they won’t let their children play outside in the front yard.
Pros
  • inexpensive
Cons
  • high crime
  • dirty
