Where to Move in SF?

My lease in my unbearable Albany apartmetn will finally be coming to an end at the end of the summer and I have been debating whether to try to find an apartment in the City and commuting into work against the usual flow next year. Here's what's important: I am single, middle-aged (30-50), job in education so the very most I could pay would be $2000/mo. and I would really like somewhere close enough public transport that I wouldn't have to worry about needing a car (which I don't have) but which also afforded me peace and quiet when I needed it.

So what neighborhoods should I check out?

I don't know much about the city and real estate prices, but my understanding is that the western part of the city (Outer Richmond, Forest Hill, Sunset) is more affordable than its eastern counterpart. I DO know that this side of the city is far more suburban and peaceful, and I believe there is some solid bus transportation (again, don't know enough about it but I think the further west you go, the more you will find what you are looking for).

Rents are tough everywhere in the city. Its just a question of finding the right place. My suggestion would be to try the Mission. You can probably find somewhere decent there for that amount.

If you want peace and quiet, Noe Valley, Cole Valley or maybe Richmond or Sunset.

Be sure thst you factor in transportation costs though. If you're going to take BART into the East Bay it is probably going to cost you a good 6$ or 7$ per day. Not a small expense.

@DocFrankenstein - I think the best places to get around from are SOMA, North Beach, Russian Hill, Cow Hollow, Mission. For transportation ease of use - SOMA is your best option.

@NigthOwInOrinda - Richmond and Sunset - although technically considered SF, feel like you are in another state. Not easy to get to anywhere from there.

On a slightly unrelated note, I came across a really cool website--it's called Padmapper-- that helps you when you are actually moving--its a rental listing aggregator so it takes info from other sites and displays it all on a one map and it has an app too so you can use it when you are out and about.

Any luck, @DocFrankenstein? I Craigslisted room shares like crazy a few months ago and can certainly commiserate with your process, although it all turned out okay in the end on my end. I'd be curious to know your findings...
