Clement Street in the Richmond DIstrict (fantastic mix of Asian restaurants/culture, and great bookstores - Green Apple is one of the best i the city). Also Valencia Street if you want to see what's happening with the young/hipster/tech scene in SF.

Well it's going to depend on your length of stay here in San Francisco. I would say if I had one day to visit the city I would walk down Columbus from the pyramid down to Fisherman's Wharf area for a great one-day SF experience! With more time Clement, Union, Polk, and Valencia are all must-visit streets for a variety of reasons.

Folsom St in the Mission. You are walkable to tons of great food, easy transit. It is quiet but still in the center of the city. Lots of great diversity of culture and good night life.

CelesteP Hi Dan, I'm from Orange County, CA (don't hold that against me:)) and my dream is to live in SF...so we are planning to move to the city for a month this summer. We found a place on Folsom in the District between 23rd and 24th...I do not know the area at all...but would you recommend it for a young family looking to explore the city and parks? is it really safe for us to walk around? thanks!

Dan Risman Jones PRO Thanks so much for commenting. I actually live about 1 and a half blocks away on Alabama between 23rd and 24th and am expecting twins in a month and have no qualms with raising children in that area. Within a couple blocks there are two parks. Within another couple blocks is another great park, and within about 8 blocks you get to Dolores Park which is one of the best kids parks in the city. Easy to get around for sure. It is all flat around there, so strollers and walking is a breeze. Tons of restaurants and stores and about 3 blocks to BART station. Sounds like you might be renting, but if you want to talk about sales, feel free to contact me. My website is www.AscendGroupSF.com

CelesteP Thanks for your prompt response! I keep reading so many mixed reviews...I'm looking for the "city" experience...but I don't want to be worried about being accosted or robbed when I'm strolling down the street with my kids during the day. I keep reading Noe Valley is the place to be for families and since we only plan to rent for the summer I wasn't sure if we should look in that area instead.

Dan Risman Jones PRO i've been in the neighborhood two and a half years. Live here with my partner, sister and brother-in-law. never had any issues. I've sold lots of clients into the Mission without any issues. Every city you need to be careful in. I wouldn't worry about walking around during the day. Maybe if you are walking around late at night you would want to be weary, but I used to live in Noe Valley too, and when I worked late and left my office at 11pm, I was weary of my surroundings there as well.

Definately the Tenderloin. North Beach still seems kind of like San Francisco too.

I agree with Mike. I immediately thought Valencia Street, and they call Clement Street the "real" Chinatown. You might also want to check out Columbus Avenue which borders North Beach and Chinatown.
