Places to live that are artistic, peaceful, and eco-conscience that are a commute to San Francisco?

I am going to be moving to San Francisco in the summer in order to attend John F. Kennedy University's graduate program in Somatic Psychotherapy. The school is located in Pleasant Hill. I have a car, and do not mind a commute. I would rather have to drive an extra forty minutes or so and be able to have a nice home and yard in the country (or forest), rather than live in the city. Do you have any suggestions for a place I could live that is peaceful, quite and eco-conscience but still young, artistiic and lively as well?

Hi Amy,

Pleasant Hill is actually not too bad, but it is definitely not artsy at all. The closest place I can think of that fits your crieria is the Berkeley Hills which are 15 minutes west of Pleasant Hill (you would usually be going against traffic if you commute at regular hours). It is definitely woodsy there as it is in Piedmont, Orinda and that area.

Unfortunately these areas are also fairly expensive. You might however be able to find a room in house (I don't know if that is an option for you.) If so that would be your best bet. Berkeley is also very eco-conscious. The city council is largely made up of former hippy types.

Anyway, I hope that helps.
