Most Expensive Zip Codes in the U.S.

Has anyone seen this? 11 of the top 48 are in the SF Bay Area...and many more are in California, which should come as no surprise

Wow! I never even heard of most of the places at the top. Duarte? (Must be down by San Diego? Or near O.C.?) And Belvedere? That's somewhere around here, but th only Belvedere I know used to have curved mustache and be on a really bad 80's show.

Orinda was like 175 or so--sounds about right, I guess, though not really for my part. We live on the "mean streets" of Orinda, I always joke.

Duarte is apparently in the LA area, near Pasadena of all places. I would have expected Malibu or Beverly Hills or maybe Hawthorne...not in the valley.

The sad thing is, I've probably lived in about half a dozen of those zip codes between my time in the Bay, in Sac, and in NYC...I guess it goes to show that even the most expensive of places have affordable housing options if you get creative. Or that I make poor choices.

Yeah, I'm surprised SF zip codes aren't higher...although I suppose Silicon Valley is more of a financial hub right now than the city itself.

@StephSF: I grew up in the San Fernando Valley, on and off, and Duarte doesn't ring a bell at all! On the other hand I rarely made it east past Burbank (technically the eastern edge of the Valley).

I think that a lot of zip codes cross over a multitude of socio-economic ranges (which is probably a good thing). But then, again, I have always thought that some counties were not well put together.

For example, I always thought that Pleasanton should be part of Contra Costa County and that Richmond should be part of Alameda County. The first is more suburban and seems to have a lot more in common with Walnut Creek, Pleasant Hill and Alamo, than with Berkeley, Oakland and Emeryville which are far more urban and similar in terms of weather as Richmond. But, then again, perhaps it is better to have counties which are more heterogenous so that people don't just ignore urban or suburban problems--etc.

Hmm...valid, excellent point. I didn't even think of things that was until you put it in those terms.

On a fun side note, I drove past a house today on Old La Honda Road (Woodside? Menlo Park? Palo Alto? Those houses should each have their own zip code...) that was selling for $2 million asking price, complete with a pool, four bedrooms, 3 1/2 baths and four acres of property. While expensive, it was significantly cheaper than I would have expected.

Did you know that Ken Kesey and his Merry Pranksters used to have a place on Old La Honda Road back in the 60's? (Ken Kesey is the author of "One Flew Over the Coocoo's Nest"). In the 60's his group of beatnic/hippies lived on a commune there and they would invite people like Hunter S. Thompson and the Hell's Angels. And that was where a group called the Warlock's played one of their earliest gigs (1965ish). They would later change their name to the Grateful Dead.

Did not know that! I did know that Neil Young makes occasional appearances at Apple Jack's Inn in La Honda. I guess there is a bit of a music scene in that area.

Here's a tidbit about Neil Young that I did not know--he is a big model train person and has a whole shed outside where he has a large model train set-up. I guess he does it with his kid. But I think his house up there somewhere too, as you implied.

I saw him in concert once about twenty years ago--Crosby, Stills and Nash had him on as part of reunion tour. Really cool as I remember it.
