Personally, I prefer Whitman or Pennsport area or even Lower Moyamensing. They are close to public transportation, reasonably priced, easy to commute by car if needed, and have lots of amenities like big grocery stores, dry cleaning, etc. but also local mom and pop shops. Walkable to bars and nightlife, easy distance to Center City or Passyunk from public transport, and still quiet and safe.

RoeS Thanks for the informative answer. That is exactly what I'm looking for. Currently, I'm living in Queens, NY, a nice, but extremely overpriced & overcrowded area. One bedroom apts. are $2,000.00 and up a month. This does not include gas, electric or cable. Many of these apts. are nothing special. Cost of living in PA is much better than NY. Will definitely look into this.
