Where to live as a single male?

Where is a safe place to live in Oakland i am moving here to attend Oaksterdam Universtiy and i am from Pittsburgh Pennsylvania more specifically Allegany County. I dont mind spending a little more, money wise. I have never visited Cali or any other big city. I would really appreciate it if you could help me find a nice, safe place to live close enough to the school. Thank you , MIchael.
