"A Slightly Snobby Hill"

The gentle slope of Cheviot Hills offers more spacious homes with larger front yards than many of its neighbors. The usual set of Mission Style and Ranch Homes dominate the area but many Georgian style manors also pop up here and there on streets like Forrester and McConnell. The long lush yards decorate the leafy streets of this largely overlooked and quiet neighborhood.

This is an affluent neighborhood whose residents are three-quarters white. The median income is over $110K with two thirds owning their homes and they very much would like to keep the character of their neighborhood from being altered by the forces of change. You can, for example, find strong resistance in the neighborhood to the proposed light rail on nearby Exposition Blvd.

There are several local draws in the neighborhood, including the Rancho Park Golf Course on its north eastern end and little places like John O’Groats, a traditional breakfast place on Pico and Patricia (which is technically in Rancho Park but is frequented by many Cheviot Hills locals).

Many residents of Cheviot Hills who live around Motor, complain a bit about car break-ins and property crimes that spill over—they believe—from Palms, the crime ridden neighborhood to the east of Cheviot Hills. Some also knock the neighborhood for its lack of sidewalks, saying that you can’t really go for a walk in it—although others claim that the leafy streets are walk-able despite the lack of sidewalks—so I guess it depends on the area of Cheviot Hills you are talking about.

Cheviot Hills residents are fiercely proud of their neighborhood, as you will find out if you ever say anything like “Is it a part of Culver City?” or, “Is it really that much nicer than Rancho Park?” You might even say they are a little snobby about it.
