"when you want to hear the blues in Dallas, Deep Ellum is the place to go"

Deep Ellum is an ideal place for the younger set and just about anyone who appreciates an eclectic selection of food and entertainment options. This arts district is just east of Downtown Dallas and is one of the most historic neighborhoods in the city.

In the 1930's, Deep Ellum was home for a number of jazz and blues clubs and you could have seen the likes of Blind Lemon Jefferson and guitarist Robert Johnson, who legend says sold his soul to the devil to get his amazing musical abilities. A few old venues still exist from that day such as Sons of Herman Hall, where you have to catch Grammy-Award winning polka group Brave Combo when they blow into town for the time of your life. A number of great eateries are in the area such as DaZa's for great New Orleans style soul food and Pepe and Mito's Mexican Cafe may be the very best Tex-Mex in the entire city.

Days and weekends you'll see skateboarders, and young people from all walks of life so it's a great place to people watch. When you want to see an entirely different side of ultra-conservative Dallas, Deep Ellum is the place to be.
Pros
  • historic charm
  • great venues for regional and national touring acts
  • great food with plenty of choices
Cons
  • high crime rates
  • noise
  • traffic
