Montauk

"Montauk is a sleepy town that screams romantic getaway"

Montauk is a very beautiful serene place, with not a lot to do except relax, have a few drinks by the water, and enjoy life. The fresh air is what will hit you first - especially is you live in NYC where the air is noticeably bad. The people were very friendly and in general happy to have visitors. The best time of year to go is in summer, but I have found the winter cooler months to be just as nice, for a wintery getaway.

There isn't much shopping or nightlife, however you are a very close drive to Sag Harbor or East Hampton, where there is more shopping and things to do. If you are looking for a relaxing weekend away, Montauk is the place to go!

Great for

  • Quiet and relaxing
  • Clean air

NoHo

"Noho is a fantastic place to live in the thick of Manhattan"

Noho is a great neighborhood to live in downtown Manhattan that is just north of the very touristy Soho. The name Noho stands for North of Houston (as does Soho which is South of Houston), as Houston St is the southern street that borders Noho. There are a lot of NYU students living in Noho but don't let that turn you off, it really is one of the perfect areas to live as it has great access to subways, is very close to the East Village and Soho, and there are some great restaurants in the area.

The only downside I can think of is that it can be quite a noisy neighborhood, especially if you live right on Broadway. But it's NYC, most of the areas are noisy.

Highly recommended.

Great for

  • Central location
  • Close to major transport
  • Chic, stylish and very New York
  • Excellent restaurants
  • Great bar scene

Not great for

  • Expensive to buy and rent because it is so desirable
  • Crowded

Albert Park

"One of the premier Melbourne suburbs for those who can afford it"

Albert Park is an amazing suburb. The beach is on your doorstep while being only a 5-10 minute commute to the CBD. The community is well established, very friendly and welcoming. Great cafe's and restaurants on Bridport St and Victoria Avenue as well. Albert Park generally has wide leafy streets with renovated stunning townhouses (some of the best in all of Melbourne). Those that aren't yet renovated are a developers dream as Albert Park has some of the most expensive real estate per sq meter in Australia. And that's the only downside really, the cost to buy a house.

Great for

  • The beach is on your doorstep
  • Friendly community feel
  • Fantastic cafe and restaurant lifestyle

Not great for

  • Very expensive to buy real estate

Albert Park would have to be one of the safest areas I have ever lived in. If there are drunk people walking the streets, it is no more than any other suburb within 15km of the CBD.

Bay St
Editors Choice

"The iconic street of Port Melbourne!"

Bay street connects the beach to the city, and is full of shops, restaurants, pubs and more. It's a great street during the day, with some fantastic eateries, but there always seems to be way too many motorbikes hooning around.

It's a little too noisy for my tastes, but some of the apartments would be really nice to live in such as the Bianca building. Great if you can afford it.

Balwyn

"Fantastic suburb, a little heavy on the traffic at times though"

Balwyn is a fantastic suburb, especially for those who cannot afford the extreme luxury of Canterbury. Great amenities, even better schools and a vibrant culture especially on weekends.

Only downside is that some streets can get very busy around around the school hours. It's a blessing and curse I suppose. Very close to schools, but you also get the traffic associated with parents dropping off their kids.

Overall a fantastic suburb, and I highly recommend it to young families looking for proximity to the city, cheaper house prices than Canterbury and a great community atmosphere. You can't go wrong in Balwyn.

Medbury Avenue

"Good, but not perfect"

I went for a drive just this morning down Medbury Avenue to see why it's been so highly rated. As it turns out, it is a very pleasant street. Some of the houses look a little run down though, so I can't say it is perfect. There is also a large section of Medbury Avenue that backs onto a car park, so again, that's not great. BUT on the whole a very pleasant street.
