"The Brew In My View."

Sunset Road was, and is, the only way to get to and from Broadway (Hwy 101) to the residences on Sunset and Weiler Roads. The land under Sunset Road (within the city limits) is a part of the holdings of the residence at 1755 Sunset Road and the city has an easement for public ingress. egress and public utilities. The residential area is outside the city limits in the county. The city / county line is the west side of Weiler Road and the north fence line of Sunset Memorial Park. The city jumped through a bunch of hoops and "legally" has allowed construction of an industrial brewery on previously zoned public, for cemetery use, land. The justified it by stating that the other properties along the highway were zoned commercial service so it was OK to change the zoning of this land to commercial service. It was also deemed OK to classify the local brewery (heavy industry) as a craft brewery (light industry) and to allow it to operate in a service commercial zone. All the while, the city just ignored the residential neighborhood that is "across the line" in the county and abuts this land. We are now having a large commercial brewery being built across Weiler Road, on the former pristine cemetery land, between the residences and our views of the bay and ocean.

In all honesty, it is not a bad project but the way it was conceived and implemented was heavy handed. Promises were made and then quickly broken once they (the city and brewery) got what they wanted. I do not understand why the city is footing the bill to upgrade the public services (water, sewer, electric) at the location when the only thing on Sunset Road within the city limits being served IS the Lost Coast Brewery brewing facility. Seems to me that the brewery should be paying for the upgrades since they are the only one who need and will receive a benefit from them.

The one benefit that the residences of Sunset Road will get is: The City of Eureka will now have to improve the surface of the road and maintain it as they promised they would in 1998 when they obtained the dedication of the Sunset Road easement.

How do I know all this? I own 1755 Sunset Drive. The city assigns numbers differently than the county and has assigned 1600 Sunset Road as the permanent address for the brewery. (There is a petition pending to change the designation to Drive in the county and leave the brewery on Road in the city.)
Pros
  • Safe and quiet, controlled access residential area.
  • In county with horses on 1 acre plots.
  • Everyone knows each other and are neighbor protective.
Cons
  • New commercial brewery between the residences and the view.
  • Future tourist traffic to and from the brewery.
