Affordable, safe, and fun place to live for a single gal in her late 20's?

Looking for a good place to move and need information about neighborhoods as I search for options. I am 29, single, and will be in a pretty average salary range. Any tips appreciated! (I have been to the area but only to visit family and hit up a few touristy spots, never explored 'like a local').
