I worked with a nun in OTR for 10 years. She felt completely comfortable walking the streets, so I took a cue from her, and I never encountered a problem.

OTR was never really as dangerous as people hyped it to be. It's had a few problems with crime, but the media always made it sound worse than it really was. They also failed to mention that a lot of the drug-related and other crimes in OTR were committed by folks coming in from the suburbs. These days gentrification is changing the demographic, but the crime rate began dropping before that.

OTR was very dangerous in the 1990s, but is currently undergoing quite a revival. New shops and restaurants are moving into the area, and I know many people who now live and work there without worrying too much about their safety. I would recommend navigating this area with caution, especially at night and when alone, but--as far as I'm concerned--it's perfectly safe during the day and is actually a fantastic place to experience Cincinnati culture and history.
