Search To Resume For Remains Of September 11th Victims

I read today on NY1 that a search was going to be re-started to look for any remains of 9/11 victims.

The search will be at the Fresh Kills landfill on Staten Island. The work will begin on Monday by city officials.

Basically, workers will sift through all the material that was removed from the World Trade Center site over the last two years. This is actually a second attempt because there was a previous attempt where people searched through materials at a Brooklyn site back in 2007.

I understand what they are attempting to do. Many families, who lost loved ones at ground zero, and whose remains were never found, just want closure. They believe some remnants of those victims could be lying in the rubble and materials in the landfill.

Do you agree with what the city is doing?

Man, this could go either way. On the one hand, maybe the families need that. On the other, it's been almost 10 years; so, maybe let's not re-open the wound.

What could they possibly find that would make anyone feel better? Some charred bones? Geez, the families should have found a way to get closure by now. I'm having trouble seeing this as in any way productive.

If they find remains can they even identify them so many years later?

Yeah... I think this is one I don't even want to touch. It's sad, though.

I agree with everyone, I do understand that the families need closure but 10 years later finding a nail shard or some such evidence is really not going to help anyone. Its a colossal waste of time, money and effort.

Btw yesterday I walked past the 9-11 memorial preview site near Chambers Street. It seems to be a museum of sorts but I was not curious enough to go in.. I really dont wish to relive that awful time maybe its enough that hordes of tourists head there anyway to satisfy their curiosity about 9-11.

@uptowngirl I agree. At a certain point all this becomes morbid. I'm not so sure I want a colossal memorial built either, as they had planned originally for the rebuilding of the site. I mean, a memorial is good, but is some huge, morbid structure necessary? Don't we want to go on, instead of being literally in this thing's shadow?

Okay, I know elsewhere I said we should remember history, but this is perhaps not the best way of remembering.

Yeah, it seems more like an exploit than a memorial. Attract tourists to see the spot where thousands of people died? Yikes.

@Everyone: I agree. Doing another search is a waste of time and money. This is money the city could spend elsewhere.

I remember soon after it happened people were flocking to ground zero...as if it were a tourist attraction. THAT was pretty morbid to me.

@Urainumfish Agreed. A memorial is a memorial, but making too much of it is sort of verging on propaganda?

Yeah, I was uncomfortable going to ground zero, although once I went I could see the value in going as a "monument" - moment of silence and reflection, a pilgrimage to a site of tragedy. But it still makes me feel a bit strange
