NYC - a haven for suicidal jumpers

The Wall Street Journal reports that NYC has the largest number of jumper suicides in the nation and says the city's many sky scrapers provide an easy conduit to suicidal folks looking to end it all.

Is the roof of your apartment building easily accessible? I think ours is locked all the time and you don't really get easy access to it. The only time that the roof is opened I think is for viewing of the Fourth of July fireworks. What's the situation in your high rise?

The door to the roof is not locked. It has some kind of latch on it to prevent someone from coming in, but going out is easy.

Ours is only accessible by a ladder or something, I think. I've never actually been up there, but I really should, since we kind of have a good view of the Statue of Liberty.

Whaaat? I would have bet anything the suicide capital is San Fran, since apparently the Golden Gate is a virtual suicide magnet for people who don't even live in the city.

I think recent economic events probably hit people harder than the city itself - although fair enough, those high-rise skyscraper offices have to provide some psychological momentum in a moment of despair...

I guess splattering on a sidewalk is not how I'd choose to go out, if I could at all help it...

@Uraniumfish there have been times in my life when I have been so down that i have actually had suicidal thoughts and I have thought about ways to end it but I think you have to have a huge amount of courage or be really, really desperate to have the guts to throw yourself out of a building. As I write this though I can't help but think of those helpless souls who leaped out of the burning towers of the WTC, I guess they really didnt have much of a choice.

@Uraniumfish: San Francisco is not a melting pot like New York. When I went there last year, I felt so calm and peaceful. The people I talked to were terrific. I felt no stress at all. And the people I talked to did not have stress either, at least they told me they didn't. I found San Fran to be a rarely calm city with a lot to offer people.

From Wiki: "Like many larger U.S. cities, San Francisco is a minority-majority city, as non-Hispanic whites comprise less than half of the population. The 2006–2008 American Community Survey estimated that 45.1% of the population was made up of non-Hispanic whites.[130] Asians of any nationality make up 31.3% of the population with those of Chinese birth or descent constituting the largest single ethnic group in San Francisco at about one-fifth of the population. Hispanics of any race make up 14.0% of the population. San Francisco's African American population has declined in recent decades, from 13.4% in 1970 to 7.3%.[130] The current percentage of African Americans in San Francisco is similar to that of the state of California;[130] conversely, the city's percentage of Hispanic residents is less than half of that of the state. Native San Franciscans form a relatively small percentage of the city's population: only 37.7% of its residents were born in California, while 25.2% were born in a different U.S. state. More than a third of city residents (35.6%) were born outside the United States.[130]"

- How is this not a melting pot? The demographics are pretty typical for an American city, which we often refer to as "melting pots."

@NeverSleeps thanks for the extract helps illustrate the diversity of San Francisco quite adequately.

@hhusted - I think the melting pot element of NYC is what makes the city great! There's lots to dislike about NYC (okay, one big thing: THE COST OF HOUSING!) - but its diversity is so intrinsic to its nature! (That's why I'm so pro-Park51 Centre...it's New York, damn it! Give us your huddled masses - from anywhere in the world!)

@ajadedidealist so true that's exactly what makes NYC such a great city its diversity and its openness.

I've lived all over the world (Paris, Rome, Exeter NH, Oxford, Tbilisi...to name a few!) and I still have got to say that there is nowhere in the world like NYC. Nowhere with the same energy, the same "vibe," the same diversity, the same fantastic atmosphere! I'm insanely in love with the city. Perhaps I'll end up settling there after all...

@uptowngirl Ha. No problem.

@ajadedidealist I am with you on the cost of housing thing - it's hard to get a bang for your buck around here, but I think the cost of living throughout this country has gotten pretty ridiculous. I am always reading articles about how our generation needs more help from parents than ever before - well, why is that? Maybe if rents reflected what people made at entry level positions then young college grads wouldn't have to call home so much!

@NeverSleeps doesn't look like entry level wages are going to go up anytime soon and just yesterday I read an article in the NYT that says Landlords are back in control of the market in NYC.

@uptowngirl I seem to remember in another post all of us remarking how 'optimistic ends to the recession, etc keep on being declared...maybe this supposed improvement in the real estate market is another example of that kind of wishful thinking.

I do agree to some extent that having a little diversity is good. It keeps you from being bored. But I don't like the idea of allowing anyone to come here. There are people in other countries that are bad. Some are involved in drugs, while some are involved in terrorism. Why allow that stuff here. How would you feel if you owned a home and people started moving in, and many of these people were involved in shady things. You wouldn't like it. In fact, you may just be so scared to have them around you would force them out of your home and block them from coming back. It is the same with NYC. Even my girlfriend, who was born here, told me she has noticed in the last three years the city has turned from being a classy city to a garbage dump. And this is from her own mouth, not mine.

@Ajadedidealist: I have visited many cities that were better than NYC. NYC is an okay city. It does not rate high on the list to me, but there are some things about it that appeal to me. That I will admit and confess.

By the way, the reason I have not moved yet is because my scripts are not finished. Once they are done, and my last two surgeries are completed, I will be gone. I still have plastic surgery to go through after having had surgery to remove cancer earlier this year. According to my doctor, I will be fully healed from all surgeries by March of next year.

By the way, my girlfriend just told me she is planning to travel to Colorado. A good friend of mine lives and works there and he said the economy is really picking up. Once she goes and establishes herself there, I will follow. So I am aiming for a departure date of April, 2011 for sure.

@Uraniumfish If I remember my Keynesian economics correctly Unemployment levels of 10% are very high they have to come down to reasonable levels for us to be out of a recession.

@Uptowngirl: Unemployment is below 10%. It is currently at 9.5%. The market has gone over 11,000 points for the first time in a year or so. There have been an increase in job creation in many parts of the country. The recession is over and has been over a while. It is just that for the first few months, the economy was in a jobless recovery. But now, the economy is picking up again.

@hhusted Amen to that .. though I do hope the Dow touching 11000 is not due to speculation. Its been on a roll for quite a while now hasn't it? Bankers I know seem to think its the money that has been pumped into the economy that has gone into the stock market. Fingers crossed , hopefully we will be able to dig ourselves out of the hole we have fallen into.
