Lawndale, Chicago - good neighborhood for families with kids?

Lawndale is a neighborhood with a lot of potential, but it currently is lacking in a few things most families would be looking for. It has seen a lot of growth in recent years, but it still isn't the safest neighborhood and there isn't a whole lot to do here. Overall, if you don't mind waiting for it to meet its potential, I think Lawndale would be a great neighborhood for an affordable starter home.
