Is West 143rd st safe for a Spanish citizen?

I am moving on New York and the best apartment I have found is in West 143rd street, Harlem. I am Spanish. I would love you to give me your sincere opinion about the convenience of living in that location to me. Thank you!!!

If you have to ask " Is this a place is safe for me to live?"... why would you want to live there? This area is so heavily populated by South Americans... I have to ask...are you really from South America?

Most neighborhoods are as safe as you make them in New York City. Obviously that's not true for all areas, but it's hard to say where exactly you are because 143rd street runs on both sides of St. Nicholas Park and they are very different neighborhoods. In either event, no one in the area is going to ask you for your citizenship. It's a mixed area. If you are friendly to your neighbors, people will look out for you. That's how New York City works, generally no matter what neighborhood you decide to live in. Pay attention to your surroundings. If people are walking to close for your comfort, stop and let them walk ahead of you. Be friendly to your neighbors and they will let you know who's who and what you should and shouldn't do, etc.

In 2010, 39 murders were reported in Harlem. Its way safer compared to 2005. In 2005 it was reported to have somewhere around 75 murders. In 2012 im guessing the murder rate should be 35? And were 3/4 into the year which means about 9 murders are still to be commited. Anyways the area of Harlem is great during the day, busy but not too busy, music fills the streets as well as shops, resturants, and transportation. Enjoy the area :)

First of all this area is heavily populated by hispanics (a LOT of dominicans). I grew up around the area and wish I could live here again more so now than before. It's about a 30 minute commute to midtown/downtown. You'll be near the 1 train which you can take from 139th and broadway or 145th and broadway and you'll also have the M4 and M5 buses. There are a ton of gorcery stores/bodegas, there's also one big supermarket on 139th. There's the Riverbank State Park around here as well on Riverside
Drive. In my opinion it's a pretty safe area but as any other place you should take precautions. In comparison to about 10 yrs ago this area has definitely changed for the better and like I said before I wish I could live around here again! If you're getting a good rent rate go for it! Did I forget to mention that the apartments are relatively big/ have better space in comparison to other locations (midtown, LES etc)?
