Is Grand Junction like a desert or is it mountainous?

A little bit of both. The main part of the city is a high desert valley, but Grand Junction, Fruita and Palisade are surrounded by the Bookcliffs, beautiful rock formations which create a mountainous environment. Fun fact: this area is also home to one of three of the country's wild horse preserves.
