Is Gramercy Park a good area for a family with a toddler and newborn?

We are moving to New York in May and looking for an apartment. Seems like all the kid friendly activities are on the West side like Chelsea, West Village, and Greenwich Village. Tribeca and UWS seem to far from everything else. Am I correct on this? Should I add Gramercy Park to our search area?
