"Green, Clean, and Busy"

E. 138th Street begins at Locust Avenue and ends at Bruckner Expressway. Then it starts up again on the other side and ends at 5th Avenue when it turns into W. 138th Street.

E. 138th Street covers a lot of territory. You will find a mixture of churches, schools, businesses (commercial and industrial), and residential buildings. There's a little bit for everyone.

The area is not too clean, but with so many industries in the area, how can you keep the environment clean. But overall, it isn't too bad an area to go look at. I'm not sure if I want to live there, since it can get busy with traffic. But to walk around in certain section, with the wide assortment of stores, I think you would do just fine.
Pros
  • Beautiful looking area
  • Very neat and clean
  • Get plenty of exercise walking in park
Cons
  • Too busy at times
  • Buildings look old and dirty

"A very high crime area"

I used to live on Brooks Avenue on 138th Street in the Bronx about 25 years ago. It was and still is one of the high crime areas in the Bronx. It is surround by City housing projects. However, they are trying to make progress in that area. Whenever I go back to visit, I see that the city has built lots of low cost houses in the area. It is also centrally located to bridges leading into Harlem, New York. It is not an area that I would recommend, but there are many families living there that might disagree.

"Packed full of character"

The stretch of E 138th street between Lincoln and St Anns ( and further) is chock full of family owned businesses and restaurants. There is a great deal of hispanic flavor on this street. You can get great pizza or used DVDs really cheap. The only problem I have found is that during warmer weather the teens and tweens in the area are out in full force and tend to hang out on the sidewalks, blocking your way and being rude. Now that is not to say that they shouldn't be there, but the attitudes many of them have can make shopping ( especially with a small child) a difficult and unpleasant experience. The businesses tho generally pleasantly staffed, don't seem to have much concern about their outward appearance and there tends to be garbage piled high at all times on the sidewalks.... this brings the rodents at night, not making it for a very pleasant walk.
