"Resort and Tunnel"

Claremont Hills is perches up just above the Caldecott Tunnel, just east of Ashby Avenue. The central feature of the area is the historic Claremont Resort, the giant white hotel that has been a landmark for the area since the turn of the Twentieth Century when when it was build by developers associated with the train lines. Now the Claremont has over a quarter of a thousand rooms, ten tennis courts, and a huge spa, making it a favorite for locals and visitors alike.

The hotel, like the hillside homes offers great views of Oakland, the bay, SF and the Golden Gate Bridge. Many of the hillside homes in the area are less than 20 years old—the 1991 Oakland Firestorm having razed much of this hillside (it came to the very edges of the Claremont before changes in winds and efforts of firefighters saved the great old hotel). Farther down along Ashby Avenue many of the older homes still remain. Ashby itself becomes almost an expressway along the Claremont Hills.

The proximity to Tilden Park and Grizzly Peak make this a great spot for those that like to go hiking or like the outdoor life. Claremont Avenue rises up behind the Claremont Resort providing a straight shot up to the summit of the canyon where it meets Grizzly Peak and Fish Ranch Road (which drops down on the other side of the Caldecott in Contra Costa County).
