It really depends on what kind of bar you like. There's a great wine bar that is next door to Dell'Anima on Hudson and Jane. Directly across the street is Tavern on Jane which is a little more divey and never crowded. There's a bar on Bank and Washington that has a fantastic happy hour and a good mix of people. Spotted Pig on Greenwich and Bank-ish is a restaurant with a pretty lively bar crowd. My favorite bar in the West Village is Daddy-O on Bedford and Leroy; the Village Tavern is directly across the street and it's a pretty good sports bar. Barrow's on Barrow and Hudson is good if you like a real dive with old-timers. And, Barrow's Ale House (just east on Barrow) is pretty cool too. White Horse Tavern is a little too college-y for me but it is really popular -- it's where Dylan Thomas drank himself to death.
