Best resources for finding an apartment in West Village, New York City?

Unfortunately, New York is a broker-centric city. They have quite the monopoly on real estate, including rentals. I had to use a broker when I first moved. But, it is avoidable if you're willing to put in the footwork (they will charge you 10% of a years rent which is almost one month's rent). Start on Craigslist under the "no fee" section and even if a broker is listing the place, he'll be willing to show you other "no fee" apartments if you let him no you can't pay it. Also, the apartment by owner section will have no fees.
