"My Dorm Street"

I lived on N 11th St at W Wisconsin Ave for one year while attending Marquette University. It was a bit loud with the windows open because I basically lived in the middle of the Marquette interchange- the largest and busiest interstate interchange in Wisconsin! I witnessed some fantastic, noisy car crashes from my window during rush hour. N 11th st has quite a bit of traffic itself and I always had to dash across the street carefully to get to class. There was great access to the city bus system. I felt close to downtown and could get to the city's central library, the grand avenue mall, and all the great downtown attractions (restaurants, bars, Summerfest, etc) quickly and easily.

"College street, USA"

North 15th street at W Wells Street is very familiar to me. My husband lived there while we were dating and attending Marquette University. The street was a bit narrow and hard to navigate because there were always cars parked on the street. The street is not particularly safe. My roomate parked her car on N 15th St one night and the next day she realized it had been stolen. The street usually had some litter. It was loud from the college students. Its not somewhere that I especially recommend that someone live, unless they are going to school at Marquette.

"Heart of downtown Milwaukee"

I recently stayed at the Pfister Hotel on E Wisconsin Avenue in downtown Milwaukee. We were able to walk a couple of blocks to a GREAT restaurant called Sabor. It seemed that there were many many restaurants to choose from along the way. After eating an awesome dinner, we were then able to walk back past the hotel to Summerfest- Milwaukee's great annual music festival. After that closed we had easy walking access to many bars but ended up at a unique joint called "The Safe House". We were able to order pizza late that night to the hotel from a local pizza place. The next morning we got coffee at a little coffee shop across the street and could quickly walk to the lakefront. WHEW! I don't know what else I could ask for! E Wisconsin Ave had everything you could want, all easily within your reach.

"Old world charm"

Old World Third Street is one of the places I send visitors who come to stay with us from out of state. The cobblestone sections are charming. The access to the riverwalk really allows for us to show off one of Milwaukee's best attributes- the riverwalk itself. The bars and restaurants have character and are fun. The traditional sausage shop run by Usingers is a must stop for fresh meats and sausages- a real, authentic Wisconsin feel. Although I think it might be a bit too noisy and hustle-bustle of a place for me to want to live, I am sure some people love living on Old World Third street because of all the things to see and do. There would also be great access to the extensive Milwaukee City bus system.

"Met my husband on Kilbourn Ave"

Kilbourn Avenue is the hub of much of Marquette University's off-campus student housing. I lived just off Kilbourn for 3 years. I even met my husband at a party along Kilbourn Ave. The housing for the most part is old, shabby, and inexpensive. It goes from student housing between N 12th and N 20th streets to lower class/inner city housing past N 20th street. Its not a terribly desirable place to live. Whether its the loud college students or the lack of security felt beyond 20th street, its just not ideal for raising a family. The street is not particulary well-kept due to student's littering. Since its not a major thoroughfare like Wells St or Wisconsin Ave its kind of the neglected parallell street just to the north of those main streets.

"W Wells runs by campus"

I frequently walked W Wells St anywhere from N 18th St all the way downtown Milwaukee while a student at Marquette University. There are typical college bars, fast food joints, college apartments, dorms, etc. Closer to downtown you have the Milwaukee Museum, Central Library, bars, and the Midwest Express Center- Milwaukee's major convention center. West Wells Street is a major thoroughfare in and out of downtown Milwaukee much like West Wisconsin Avenue is. Although its not the sort of place you would really want to live unless you were a student, its a fairly safe and clean street. There is great access to the city bus system for easy getting around Milwaukee.

"Not the greatest street to work on"

I worked on Highland Ave at N 35th St while employed at Miller Brewing Company. I lived east of there about 20 blocks. There was excellent access to the city bus system. I got picked up 2 blocks from my apartment and was dropped off right outside my office building. I could ride my bike on nice days. However, on the days I rode my bike, I really had to be feeling brave. Along Highland Ave you see people that look like they might be up to trouble. I was heckled along the way. The traffic is fairly heavy and there were always some speeders. I also encountered nice folks along the way, but ultimately felt intimidated on Highland Ave between 16th and 35th streets and don't really recommend it for a recreational visit but its okay enough to work there. After 2 years I never had any serious situation truly endanger my safety.

"Plenty to see and do"

On W Wisconsin Ave you can get a little bit of everything. It runs out to the suburbs, but when you get close to downtown Milwaukee you see that everything downtown revolves around and is referenced in relation to, Wisconsin Ave. There is the Grand Avenue Mall with various stores to shop at like Old Navy, LInens and Things, and various jewelry and clothing stores. There are various hotels to choose from whether you want a Howard Johnson or the historic Ambassador Hotel. You will find bars, restaurants and the Midwest Express Center- Milwaukee's major convention center which further solidifies my opinion that downtown really does revolve around W Wisconsin Ave.

"Glad I was only there a year..."

I lived in a basement apartment for one year on N 13th st at Kilbourn Ave in Milwaukee while attending Marquette University. I was 2 blocks from school. I was only one block from the bus stop so I had great access to the city bus system. I lived across the street from Sinai hospital. Great if I needed medical care I guess (I never used it) but the ambulances coming in to the emergency room could be quite loud. I was also unhappy about the vagrants that could walk by and yell into my windows. Fortunately the windows had bars on them to add to our safety. I do not recommend N 13th St to families, just to college students.

"Typical college neighborhood meets inner city"

I lived on N 16th St at State St for one year. This was while I was a student at Marquette University. I lived in an apartment that was decent, but had an occasional cockroach. The gas station that we could see through the window at the back of the apartment had heavy security due to the somewhat unsafe nature of the the neighborhood. We could occasionally hear gun shots. The streets were not particularly clean. However, there was excellent access to the bus routes and I used the city bus to get to work. The University was there providing a great college education, but the elementary, middle, and high schools used by the families nearby were not so good. It was an okay place to live while going to school but I don't recommend living there long term
