"Quiet bungalow lined street"

Decent street. I am a life long resident and the entire neighborhood is definately improving. It's a solid, low cost area. A nice place to raise children as long as you are careful with what school you choose. I personally recommend St. Gall or St. Nicholas of Tolentine schools nearby. Morrill math and science school has seen significant improvements the past couple years as well- check out facebook for a look into the neighborhood.

"On the upswing.. Sunny days ahead for this solid southwest side neighborhood!"

It is a pretty decent neighborhood- working class to middle class. Some of the public schools aren't all that great, but not terrible either. There are some great catholic schools nearby though. The neighborhood is fairly well maintained- neat lawns and cozy bungalows. It is also very quiet and peaceful- a nice place to raise kids as long as you do your research on schools. While the neighborhood was once not very safe it has seen significant improvement the last few years. The real estate market is on the upswing here and there has been an increase in business. As someone pointed out earlier its very diverse- white, black, Hispanic, and middle eastern- Recently I've seen a few Asian families moving in. If it continues to improve at the rate it has been ( which it only seems to be getting better and I've lived here for 18 years) it is sure to become one of Chicago's hottest neighborhoods. There are BIG things coming to Chicago Lawn and I'm glad we stood by it in its worse years- it is definitely worth it now.

KurtBrzuszkiewicz Thinking about purchasing a two flat on 68th and maplewood. Should I be rethinking this because it's very close to Western? I have been listening to the police scanners for the last few weeks and there have been a lot of domestic violence and Robbery with the occasional shooting. But I figure this is slow compared to what it would be like in the summertime. Any information you might have would be a great help thank you!!

RuthN Do not, I repeat, Do not even think of purchasing a home in the area. The area is hell on earth and getting worse every day. I made a huge mistake 5 years ago and moved from NYC back to my childhood home because I would not have been able to get much more than $70,000. It is now worth even less and tho I love my house I can not go out at night as I don't drive and it is very unsafe to walk alone at night and I live west of California which is considerably better than the area you are considering. There have been 4 shootings within 2 blocks of me this past month , something not common even a year ago so the area is changing for the worse and it wasn't very nice to begin with. Also be aware that unless you are an alcoholic with a dozen kids the only businesses within walking distance are liquor stores and daycare centers. You can check the crime page of the Southwest News Herald online to get a clearer picture of what the area is like. Also if you buy a home here the odds of being burglarized are about 70%. Don't do it!!
