Go onto Craigslist and look under "no fee" and "by owner" sections to try to find something that doesn't have a broker / broker's fee. It's hard to avoid a broker right now because the vacancy in New York is under 1%. But, it should start you off. You can also go to broker's websites to get an idea of what you're looking for and contact them directly to try to find something similar with no fee. Try Citihabitats or Bond first.
