"An old mining town deep in the heart of the Rockies"

Rico is a small town located in southwestern Colorado. The town is home to only 265 people and the nearest larger town is Cortez (population 8,451) which is an hour away. For a larger city with decent shopping and dining, residents must travel through the mountains an hour and a half to Durango. If the distance were measured in a straight line it would be much closer, but due to the mountainous terrain, drivers must take a large circular route to get to Durango.

Rico started as a mining town and there are still mine shafts standing here for people to see. The town hall in Rico was built in 1891 and is now on the National Register of Historic Landmarks. In addition to some great older buildings here, there are also some older buildings that haven't been kept up very well and look as if they will need to be torn down in coming years.

Almost 93% of the population is white and the majority of residents work in construction, education, or professional, scientific, and technical services. The median household income for Rico is $40,053 which is about $15,000 below the average for Colorado. The median average home price here is $291,028 which is about $54,000 higher than the average for the state.

Around Rico there are some very cool hot spring rock formations. This is just another one of the scenic wonders of Rico.

I would recommend Rico for anyone who loves the outdoors and being remote, because that is exactly what Rico is - remote.

"Rico is rich in beauty"

Rico is a beautiful little town of about 200 along Colorado HW 145 north of Cortez. The town is an old mining community that struck it "rico" back in the Pioneer days. At nearly 9,000 feet the town is definitely in the mountains and surrounded by mountains and the San Juan National Forest.

There are some classic historic buildings in the "downtown" and the area is worth checking out. For those looking for land in a remote mountainous area with lots of forest access properties around Rico could be worth the visit.
