"There are great neighborhoods but crime is the biggest problem"

Memphis has so much potential but its public image has been marred by the uncontrolled crime in the city. Politicians are not exactly civic-minded so any opportunity to further self-interests are maximized. However, as of 2016, there is a new mayor (Jim Strickland) who is doing a lot of good things and bridging the communication gap with residents. There are gems of neighborhoods (particularly in Midtown) like Central Gardens, Annesdale, Cooper Young, Evergreen but more and more, crime is a factor in driving people away. All this to say, there are pockets of paradise in Memphis, but you have to look hard and/or know someone who is knowledgeable about the area. On the upside, there is lots to do and much of it for free or low cost...plus people here are very much socially-minded so philanthropy and volunteer opportunities are available.

"Full of History but Dangerous Place to Live"

Memphis beautifully located on the Mississippi River. It boasts that it is the birth place of Rock & Roll and houses the famouse Graceland Mansion. For those who are seeking good blues or bar-b-que, there is Beal Street right down town. Also, in the past few years, there has been a lot of growth out in German Town and the areas away from down town. That being said, downtown is still a dangerous place to be after dark if you are not on the main streets. Additionally, you can be driving along and suddenly find yourself in a 'bad' part of town without any warning.

"Great for families, a wonderful cul-de-sac."

Lovely single family homes in the city of Memphis, really nice neighbors and close community. Near public and private schools, churches and shopping. Great place to raise children.
