"A Trip Back in Time"

Being in Eads is much like what you'd think it would be like living back in the 50s or 60s. Things here just move at a slower place. When you travel down main street, the street is wide with lots of room like they used to make roads a long time ago, and the building are all brick. The homes are all smaller and charming, many with pretty gardens and lovely patios. They all have a unique look and there are sidewalks in front, and you can often see residents walking around.

Around Eads there are a lot of farms and agriculture is the second largest industry here behind health care and social assistance. There is a very small hospital in Eads which doubles as a nursing home on one side. There are a couple of doctors in town as well.

The current population of Eads is 622. One good thing about these small, self-sufficient towns is that when the economy turns down like it did in 2010, fewer people seem to lose their livelihood. Although the median household income here is well below the state average, you can get a very charming home in town for around $55,000. This town would be a great place to raise kids for those who want to get away but still be part of a community.
Pros
  • very affordable land/homes
Cons
  • far from Front Range
  • very remote

"Eads is a little farming town from the past"

Eads is a small eastern Colorado town of less than 1000 people. The town feels and looks like Kansas, the border is only about 20 miles away to the east. Eads of not on major highways and does not get much traffic, the Front range is about 100 miles to the west and you can no longer see the mountains from this far out in the plains.

When digging in about Eads I learned a few interesting things about the little farming community. Eads High School has only about 65 students and was/is the first high school in Colorado to give a personal computer to each students and then the school took on a computer-based curriculum, this is amazing for this quiet little town.

A quick look at the cost of Eads real estate showed a good sized house with detached garage in town for $54,000--that is significantly cheaper than the Front Range! There was also a little brick beauty shop in town for sale for $25,000. What year does Eads live in?

The site of the Sand Creek Massacre of 1864 took place about 15 miles to the east of Eads, the area is now dominated by surrounding farmland and the little creek flowing though. There is a lot of history in this area with the Cheyenne and Arapahoe indians and the US Indian Wars. The area is managed by the National Park Service.

Besides the love of land and farming there are local fishing tournaments, the annual Snow Goose Festival and the Kiowa County Fair. Eads is the most populated community in Kiowa County.
