From what I gather, Roosevelt Island is a good place if you want extra space and quiet but still want to be close to Manhattan. The rent is pretty reasonable and, apparently, Roosevelt has one of the few good public schools. It's kind of a pain to get in and out of, though. And, there isn't much of anything in the way of nightlife, entertainment and restaurants. Basically, it's for families that don't mind the transportation issue.
