Taking Care of the Kids

If you have children with you when you come, and you have errands to run but can't handle taking the kids, you can count on NYC to supply children's services to help you out.

One such service is The Baby Sitter's Guild. This place is located at 60 East 42nd St, Ste. 912. Their number is 212-682-0227.

Another place you can take the kids for the time you need is called Camp Broadway. This place is located at 336 West 37th St, Ste 460. You can call them at 212-575-2929.

If anyone knows of any place else that can handle kids, please list them here. I am sure people with kids would like to know as many places as possible.

NYC moms also use services provided by organizations like Sitter City (http://www.sittercity.com/) which is quite a trusted source for sitters as is To the Rescue Mom(http://www.totherescuemom.com) which is a service which can also be contacted via phone at 917 536 8449. Many of these baby sitter services offer sitters who are multilingual and speak several foreign languages.
You can expect to pay anywhere upwards of $15 an hour for a baby sitter in NYC.

A friend told me about a parental co-op kindergarden they made back when he was raising his kids. All the parents were required to put in a day a month. No excuses, or your kid is out. Which was a pretty great and affordable way to take care of kids.

You mean in order for the parents to get away with paying a low amount, all they have to do is be at the place one entire day a month? That isn't so bad. What happened to it?

That's right, hhusted. What happened is the kids grew up, naturally.

If you don't want to go to an agency, another idea is calling up some of the private girls' schools like Chapin or Brearley, which may/may not have baby-sitting lists (mine did), where girls who want to work as a baby-sitter sign up! Obviously, they're not just going to give out young girls' contact info like candy, but if you know someone who knows someone with children at one of the schools or are otherwise familiar enough with the scene, it's a good option! Or put up signs in corner bookstores, etc..

Hey, you have a great idea, ajadedidealist. It is something worth looking into. At least this gives parents options as to how to take care of their kids during the day, if they are unable to.

Another option is looking into your local parish - sometimes churches either run day cares, or know of teenagers in the community looking to make some baby-sitting money. It's a place to ask around - and the closeness of your average parish means your babysitter can be locally vouched for by other community members.

Hey, that is a great idea, ajadedidealist. I didn't think about that. Great choice. Although I do not have kids, if I hear someone who is looking for a babysitter, or just someone to handle their children for a while, I'll let them know. Thanks.
