NYC Under Water

I don't know if anyone read the story in the Metro New York paper on Wednesday, April 14th or not. But there was a story about a possible flood in NYC by the year 2100. Now I know this is many years ahead, and everyone of us living now won't see it, but NYC officials said they wanted to prepare now by creating wetlands in Lower Manhattan. They have other ideas as well.

And you don't think the writers might be pulling your leg?

Technically speaking, this is definitely possible. If ocean levels rise by more than a couple meters, most of NYC will be under-water. Basically the same thing will happen to most of Florida and other coastal towns. Scientists have warned that this will cause the largest displacement of people ever.

Wetlands would definitely help as they function as nature's water reservoir. But still, it'll be a tough sell to today's people to drop a wetland into Lower Manhattan.

So, I guess I don't want to invest in any real estate downtown, then?

I'm guessing the city would do something to keep out the water. You would think some genius is working on that technology as we chat about it. Not sure how they're going to save the entire state of Florida, though. Oh, well.

I wouldn't cry if Florida didn't make it.

I still haven't forgiven Florida for 2000.

Wait, isn't the world supposed to end in 2010 anyway?

@JenMac Nah, world destruction's behind schedule, as usual...

@ ajadeidealist Me neither. That place is just crawling with members of the Bush clan.

I thought it had until 2012?

And on Florida: fine. But at least let MY family get out first.

My bad, BroadwayBK, I meant 2012. We have another 2 years until we all float!

@JenMac: Where did you get such a crazy idea of the world ending in 2010.

@BroadwayBK: Nothing will happen in 2012 either. Just shifting of planets and a few natural disasters, but not the end of the world.

@Everyone even I have friends who are paranoid about water levels rising in NYC in the future.. they often talk about the future floods in the East River . so maybe there is some truth to the story .who knows what havoc Mother Nature has in store for us?for instance who anticipated the wild floods that drowned so many parts of NJ earlier this year?

@hhusted Which natural disasters are you planning for 2012?

@uptowngirl I can see the cause for a little concern... we should all be concerned about the future of the planet, and take care of the damn thing.

I think I'd miss downtown Manhattan if water levels went up. Yeah, Florida wouldn't get my tears, but downtown is kind of special and full of history. I'd get all sentimental if it turned to swampland.

@BroadwayBK: The natural disasters you see now are the same you would see in 2012, only more magnified.

Some Mayan professor (studying ancient Mayan culture) went on the news a few weeks ago to say that in fact the world is NOT ending in 2012 - and that is as miscalculation on the part of the media - it should already have ended ages ago, or something...

Well, my mom always says, "If the Mayans were so smart, then where the hell are they now?"

I always laugh at that but kinda true . . .I mean, they could see everyone's demise but their own? Hmmmmm . . .

@JenMac Maybe the Mayans are on the moon, sipping cocktails and laughing at us?
