NYC and Domestic Violence

There is one thing we do not like to hear about and that is domestic violence, but yet in NYC it occurs more often than you may think or like. The NYPD realize that NYC is a pressure cooker and can put a lot of stress on people. Therefore, they put forth steps to train their officers to handle domestic violence.

Did you know that on average the NYPD responds to nearly 600 domestic violence calls daily. So in order to handle this the NYPD established a Domestic Violence Unit that is used to coordinate the Department's overall domestic violence strategy by training its officers as to how to handle domestic violence cases. Currently, there are over 380 Domestic Violence Prevention Officers and Domestic Violence Investigators in the 76 police precincts in NYC.

What is unique about this is that this system is not found in any other state. NYC is the first to develop such a system.

So if you should be a victim of domestic violence, or hear of someone who is, there is help.

I'm glad to hear that this is going on, @hhusted. Given how population-dense NYC is, it makes sense that domestic violence would be a particular problem here. That said, it really shouldn't be limited TO here - I hope that more places take the initiative and develop this model.

When I read how many complaints are received by the police daily over domestic violence, I was astounded. I didn't realize it is such a problem in NYC. Hopefully, the program will curb it and educate people as to how to handle domestic violence better.

@hhusted there are a few other non profit organizations in the city that also deal with such issues like domestic violence- Sakhi-http://www.sakhi.org/ and Safe Horizons-http://www.safehorizon.org/ are just two of them.

It's a good thing there are organizations in the city to take care of victiims of domestic violence. Why would anyone want to hurt someone else.

@hhusted I wish there was a simple answer to that but maybe its a power or control thing?

And there are folks like Queen's democrat Hiram Monserrate a perpetrator of domestic violence who is defiantly fighting his expulsion from the senate despite his misdemeanor assault conviction in a late-night incident that involved his girlfriend, Karla Giraldo( If I remember correctly he slashed her face with a broken glass).

Glad to hear Monserrate looks like he'll be getting what he deserves after all, though - anyone who does that to his girlfriend is not someone I want holding any sort of public office!

I've heard there are women's shelters in the city that have secret locations, so the abusive boyfriends/husbands won't know how to find the women and try to threaten them into coming back...I don't actually know how a woman finds these shelters, but I'm sure there's an underground network once you go looking for help...

@uraniumfish both the organizations that I mentioned have such shelters. I initially wanted to work with them but realized that I am too emotional a person to be clear headed and objective as is needed in such a organization.

Maybe being emotional is a good thing, though, and an advantage in doing that kind of work!

I used to work as a counselor, and talked to many women about the abuse they took from their husbands and boyfriends. Some of the stories made me cry. The one essential element (of course there are many - but one I found most startling), is that the one person who does the abuse, was also abused when he was younger. A study was done about 5 years ago relating to abusive men, and from that study, the conclusion was that when men abuse women, it is because they have some deep inward hatred for women inside their subconscious mind. It could be they were victims of incest by their mothers when young and internalized it. Hard to say. I found the study and work to be very interesting.

And yes, I was able to help the women, who came to me for advice.

I think having secret locations is a bit of the norm for women's shelters?

It's strange that NYC is the only city with a specific police program to train officers on how to deal with domestic violence, as I'm assuming that officers nationwide get a lot of calls on the issue. At least, there are one or two instances on every episode of COPS.

Maybe it's the norm, but having never been in a situation where I needed to flee from someone in such circumstances i didn't know that existed until it was pointed out to me specifically. On this point, I'm rather glad to be naive.

Yet another organization the city has is ACS- the Administration for Children's Services. Child abuse really gets my goat.. I dont have any children but love all my nephews dearly. Ever since their births I have noticed I have become extremely sensitive to the treatment of children. I actually wanted to work around children and even interviewed at Gymboree ages ago but I didnt make the cut .. maybe being foreign with 'a different 'accent I didnt meet the standards.. its after that I decided I was better of working for myself..and havent looked back since...

I can't stand child abuse either. It turns my stomach to see children get abused. They are innocent. They can't fight back.
