Naughty NYC

Now, I admit, much of this list makes me blush, but I thought I'd link it anyway - Time Out NY has a list of "happy ending parlours" - http://newyork.timeout.com/articles/sex-dating/76059/best-happy-ending-parlors-in-new-york-city. Maybe I'm just a prude, but I rather thought that these places were, if not a rarity, then nevertheless more discreet (I imagined things like call-in escorts and "massage therapists" advertised in the Village Voice were more common, as they were not restricted to one location). Have you ever seen/passed by one of them? When I lived in Vienna I lived above a quite sketchy massage parlour, but never seen anything of the kind in NY.

I like the editors note ("paying for sex is illegal in New York City"! and "At each location, your mileage may vary, depending on your masseuse, your look and your behavior"!).

Isn't this list just setting up various police raids?

And you can't leave out TimeOut NY's listing of public sexcapades: http://newyork.timeout.com/articles/features/29353/come-outside-and-lay

Wow, sex and a massage. Incredible what you will find in the city. I'll bet the place is jammed constantly.

@BroadwayBk enjoyed reading NYC's versions of lovers lane

@ajadedidealist This was an eye opener thought they only existed in cities like Bangkok

Btw this is what the latest L magazine threw up-

I guess that's the thing about NYC. Whatever you're into, whether it be Proust, parcour, or kinky S&M orgies, NYC has got it! You've gotta love it - NYC must be the only place on the planet where even the most obscure fetish probably has its own club night and meeting group...

Oh, goodness. I'm blushing from all this. But I'm guessing the happy ending is only for men, hunh?

So, um, there's something I've been wanting to know but was to shy to ask. You know how 42nd Street got cleaned up in recent years? Where did the, um, not so clean contingent go, exactly? Surely every city has such a district?

I think there are plenty of houses of ill fame in K-Town, that very small Korean midtown neighborhood in the W 30's, but not sure where else...

Not really, ajadedidealist. Actually Amsterdam is known for the sex parlors. You can find one on nearly every street. At least this is what I learn when doing research on the area.

@hhusted prostitution is actually legal in the Netherlands maybe that's why they are so open about it.

@ uraniumfish I don't really know if NYC has a district per se but it does have a ton of strip clubs which are located all over the city like Flashdancers, Larry Flynt's Hustler club , Scandals,Sapphire, Scores etc Have heard that these clubs are especially popular with the high rollers of Wall Street who are happy to drop tons of' cash in there.

Fair enough, @hhusted, I'm just going by hearsay/what friends have mentioned (not that they've ever gone in search of houses of ill repute, to be fair). But I imagine in the age of craigslist, brothels can be more "discreet" - there need not be a huge red light "district" so much as a red light website...

I really thought this city cleaned up its act regarding brothels and prostitution houses. I guess you take them down one place, they will spring up under a different name another place.

@hhusted I think these kind of joints exist in every urban city in fact several thinkers in the US and elsewhere advocate the legalizing of prostitution.
Here are some points of view on this subject-

I'm in favor of legalizing the world's oldest profession - it's not going anywhere, so you may as well make it safer for everyone involved.

I agree with you, @BroadwayBK - I'd rather people be safe, clean (and taxed) rather than unregulated anyday - I feel the same thing about most drugs. There's an interesting "Sex Diary" on the NYMag this week, where the writer is a dominatrix, and there's a big debate going on about whether she's technically a prostitute or not...the things that go on in NYC! Apparently you can make $800+ an hour kicking businessmen in the crotch with stilettos. Not bad stuff.

I seriously doubt it would ever be legalized in this city, since this city is in the United States, a country whose Puritan ethic still runs pretty deep. I'm on neither side of the legalization debate, but just saying, I don't see it happening ever.

@Uraniumfish I agree with you though I think the state of Nevada has some sort of legalized prostitution remember seeing a feature on the famous Bunny Ranch once..

Yeah it's legal in Nevada...one of the reasons why Vegas is the nation's adult playground.

I recently watched a disturbing documentary on young prostitutes in this city - Very Young Girls. Anyone seen it? You can stream it on Netflix. It talks about pimps who actually drive around looking for girls who have nowhere else to go and they sort of romance/abuse them into becoming prostitutes. Every one of those girls' stories involved some evil pimp pulling up just when they felt like they had no where else to turn....sad.

That really is sad, @BroadwayBK, and a sobering look at the fact that even when no trafficking is involved, prostitution can be quite exploitative.

The one thing I know about it, based on my reading years ago, is that if prostitution were made legal, those involved in it would stand to lose an incredible amount of money. Just like drugs, if illegal drugs were made legal, those who sell and distribute illegal drugs would really lose an enormous amount of money. That is why the drug cartel in Columbia and even in Mexico, pay off officials so as to keep the drug trafficking going. I believe, this is based on what I read about it, that if prostitution was made legal the same thing would happen.

I'm in no way condoning prostitution. I am just providing facts about it and what would happen in the event prostitution would become legal. In reality, having prostitution legalize wouldn't hurt the average person, except for women. Because it would give women, especially those with no career, unemployed, or just out of school, a field to go into to make instant money, without being in fear of getting caught. There are women, and girls under 20, who also do it now, but they risk getting caught every time they go on the street.

People will do what they want, no matter what we like or dislike. That seems to be the way things play out with politicians.

Prostitutes generally - not always, but generally - have certain psychological problems and had not-so-great childhoods. Or terrible drug addictions.

The average unemployed woman wouldn't just say, 'hmmm, think I'll try my hand at prostitution.' And it's not like she doesn't have that option now. Becoming a call girl is not an out-of-reach option for most women. And a lot of women have taken to offering their personal services via Craig's, pimp free.

@hhusted And I'm not sure what the possibility of criminals losing money because of legalization has to do with these same criminals paying off officials "to keep it going." Are you insinuating that these criminals are the ones keeping things illegal? I don't follow at all.

On the one hand, Amsterdam's legalizing prostitution seems progressive, in that the women are treated for disease, and must go to regular medical checkups, etc. On the other hand, it's a bit tacky how everyone who visits Amsterdam or writes about visiting Amsterdam has to make it a point to comment on the red light district. If for no other reason than personal pride at being a New Yorker, I don't especially want this place to become synonymous with paid sex!
