Health Department Cracking Down on Horse Stables
The city Health Department is considering legislation that will require stable owners to provide a five-week vacation for horses, along with bigger stalls, and a sprinkler system. One such stall that the legislation aimed at was the Brooklyn horse stable Kensington Stables. According to owner Walker Blankinship, if the proposaled changes are agreed and passed, they changes will put him out of business.
He charges $37 for an hour ride now. If those changes do occur, he may have two choices: 1) Raise his hourly rate to $100, or 2) Close down the business. He may only have one offer. If he raises his rates, he will no longer get customers.
I think it is a shame that the Health Department has to develop such strict regulations. What is good about the entire process is that the changes have not been voted on yet. The Health Department is taking comments from neighborhoods, animal activists, and anyone else who cares to comment, before making a final determination.
How do you feel about the proposed changes the Health Department is considering for horse stables?
