Bike Accidents

My friend and I went down 3rd Ave between 27th St and 30th St New Year's Eve and saw three accidents along the strip. Each one involved a biker. One was right in the middle of the street. The ambulance and police came to block off the street. Then two blocks up, another accident involving a biker. What a night.

Did anyone see any biker accidents New Year's Eve or anything in the last week? If so share your story.

I just wanted to add I saw another one yesterday. I think a law should be passed to control where bikes are allowed to ride and how to ride their bikes. This way accidents are lessened. Any ideas?

As a frequent cyclist, I can say that the lack of bike lanes in a suitable set of locations in this city drives me crazy! I don't want to go all the way to East End Avenue to take a bike - most European cities have bike paths in nearly every street! I'm happy to ride safely if I have a place to ride - it's probably better than me walking my big, heavy bike along the sidewalk for miles until I get to a bike path. Likewise, biking isn't a sensible way of commuting in this city given the path restrictions; how much better for the environment would it be if all those cars had to give way to we commuting cyclists? We'd keep fit, that's for sure!

What a dream that would be, ajadedidealist, if we could get rid of all the cars in the city. At least we wouldn't have so much dang pollution.

You are right about one thing, there just isn't enough places for bike riders to go. I think if the city is going to accommodate bike riders, they should at least make a way for bike riders to have their own path to ride, just as the buses do now.
